Tel Aviv: Since the start of the Israeli campaign in Gaza, Iran-backed extremist group Hezbollah, based in Lebanon, has continued to attack Israel. In response, Israel is also continuously targeting Hezbollah’s bases in southern Lebanon, but during this time, one thing that has troubled Israel is Hezbollah’s air defense system. With Iran’s help, Hezbollah has been equipped with the capability to shoot down drones and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which has increased Israel’s concern. Israel has also acknowledged the strength of Hezbollah’s defense system. According to the report of Israeli media portal Jerusalem Post, Hezbollah started using drones 20 years ago with the help of Iran. The organization currently has drones that can carry around 50 kg of explosives and have the ability to reach a range of around 150 kilometres.
Ability to shoot down Israeli drones
Arab media reports show that along with the Iranian Shahed drone, the air defense system has become a major strength of Hezbollah. Hezbollah also has missiles capable of shooting down advanced Israeli drones, the Hermes 450 and Hermes 900. Only last month, Hezbollah had shot down a Hermes drone flying over Lebanon, which was also confirmed by the Israel Defense Force. There is a suspicion that Iran had provided missiles to Hezbollah for this. Iran has been providing such missiles to its allies. Late last month, pro-Iranian Houthis shot down an American 9MQ Reaper drone in Yemen.
short and medium range missiles
A major strength of Hezbollah’s air defenses is the SA8 system, which includes short-range missiles that can hit at a range of 2 to 9 kilometers and an altitude of up to 5 kilometers. Along with this, there is also SA17 system, which can hit targets up to a distance of 20 kilometers. There is also a suspicion that there are additional weapons and defense systems, which Hezbollah has not yet disclosed.
