Friday at 7:00 p.m. the Latvian youth will play against Austria, on Saturday at 2:15 p.m. against Finland, but on Sunday at 11:45 a.m. the qualification will be completed in the game against Romania.
In the qualification phase of the championship, the national teams are divided into five groups of four teams each. The top two teams in each group will qualify for the final round of the 2024 European Championship (M18 EHF EURO 2024), which will be held in Montenegro.
13 teams have already qualified automatically thanks to higher performances – Spain, Sweden, Germany, Croatia, Denmark, Iceland, Hungary, Slovenia, Portugal, Norway, France, Serbia and the Faroe Islands.
On the other hand, those teams that complete the qualifying phase in third and fourth place in their group will continue competition in the B Division championship (M18 EHF Championship 2024 I or II), joining Georgia, Bulgaria, Great Britain, Belgium and Azerbaijan.
In preparation for qualifying for the European Championships, the Latvian U18 national team played a friendly tournament “Baltic Sea States Cup 2023” in the Estonian city of Tartu at the end of December. Success was achieved in the first two games – against Estonia with 35:37 and against Lithuania with 41:24. In the third game, however, the Latvian youth lost in a bitter battle to their opponents from the qualifying phase, Finland (29:32).
In July 2023, the Latvian youth also met the Romanian national team on the same field at the European Open Championship, but lost 21:28. The current U18 national team, however, is playing against Austria for the first time.
It will be possible to follow the European Championship games live on the European Handball Association’s EHFTV platform.
