Previously, Jay Opetaia defied the IBF call to fight Briedi as a mandatory contender, relinquishing his maiden heavyweight title to fight at the epic show in Riyadh.
Briedis fought his last fight to date in July 2022 when he lost to the aforementioned Opetaia in Gold Coast, Australia, where he lost the championship title.

At the end of September 2020, Mairis defeated the Cuban Juniel Dorticos in the final of the World Boxing Super Series (WBSS) in Munich and won the Muhammad Ali Trophy, as well as the IBF championship belt in the first heavyweight category and the championship belt from “Der Ring” magazine.
Briedis was also champion in the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and World Boxing Council (WBC) versions.
The 38-year-old Briedis has achieved 28 victories in his professional boxing career, 20 of which were by knockout. Before the fight with Opetaia, he had suffered only one defeat – in the semifinals of the first season of the WBSS in Riga against Oleksandr Usik of Ukraine.
On the other hand, 32-year-old Ramires has won 44 of 45 duels, 30 of which ended in knockouts. His only defeat came last November when he lost to Dmitry Bivola in a fight for the WBA championship belt. Ramirez was once the second WBO middleweight world champion and defended the belt five times.
Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Briedis was criticized for posting on social media that he was “not taking sides” in the war caused by Russia in Ukraine and blamed the media for what he said was false reporting the war.
Briedis was also criticized for not supporting the demolition of the monument dedicated to the Soviet Army in Victory Park.
Briedis was also previously publicly condemned for sharing videos of self-proclaimed Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko and vaccine skeptics on social media.
