It will soon be 700 days since Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to invade Ukraine. Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko said Ukraine is going through difficult times. There are not enough ammunition and not enough soldiers at the front. And in his opinion, the Germans should realize that war could soon break out across Europe. And Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed concern about Donald Trump’s plans.

The war in Ukraine has been going on for 696 days, and the ruler in the Moscow Kremlin has made it clear that nothing has changed in the goals he announced when he ordered the invasion of Ukraine. As on February 24, 2022, he now insisted in January 2024 that Ukraine should be denazified and demilitarized.
The situation at the front is tense. The mayor of Kiev, Vitaly Klitschko, went among the soldiers, and he didn’t like what he heard. The defenders of the homeland complained about a great shortage Ammunition and lack of fresh reinforcements. In an interview with the most widely read German daily newspaper Bild, Klitschko did not spare any critical words.
“There has been an insane, huge shortage of ammunition for months. “Ammunition is the number one issue when it comes to the front,” the mayor of the Ukrainian capital said, adding that pressure from the Russian side has been “crazy” recently. In this context, he complained about Germany’s decision in the middle of the week not to send Taurus long-range missiles to Ukraine. “Unfortunately, yesterday’s decision was not in favor of Ukraine,” noted Klitschko.
Taurus is so important for Ukraine because the range of the missiles can disrupt the logistics of Russian troops. This would increase the security of Ukrainian soldiers and citizens. In addition, the Taurus could be used to destroy Russian weapons depots, emphasized Klitschko.
The mayor of Kyiv stressed that this is a time that Ukrainians would describe as difficult, but other Europeans should be aware that they may soon find themselves in a similarly difficult time.
“That’s why I would like to use this opportunity to send a message to Germany: We are defending our country, but also the entire European Union.” We should never underestimate Russia. Putin will go as far as we let him. Every German politician must be aware of this. The war is now in Ukraine. It could become a war in Europe.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj at the same time invited US presidential candidate Donald Trump to Ukraine. He called Trump’s plans to end the war dangerous.
“This means that he says that he will decide for himself – I’m not even talking about Russia – without both sides, that is, without us… That is, if his idea, which no one has heard of, does not work.” , our people, then he will do everything to enforce it anyway. And that’s what worries me a little bit,” he explained.
Although, according to Klitschko, the situation in Ukraine is currently extremely complex, according to Reuters Ukrainians have already started rebuilding the damaged cities. One such city is Trostianec, a city destroyed by war.
“We believe that our city will become even better to the detriment of our enemies,” said Natalia Androsova, 60, one of the many residents.
Trostianec is one of six settlements rebuilt with government funding as part of a pilot program to develop the skills and experience needed for a later, much larger reconstruction. Mayor Yuriy Bova said time was running out to bring the cities back to life or risk losing millions of Ukrainians who could help rebuild the country but would rather live there than in after a long stay in exile to return to Ukraine. According to Reuters, repairs are also being carried out in the city of Okhtyrka. Most schools have been repaired and equipped with new windows, roofs or bomb shelters, thanks in large part to international donors.
However, some Ukrainians do not like these government efforts. They believe that the money should first be spent on the army, and only after the victory will it be possible to put money into the reconstruction of cities.
The second group of residents claims that Ukraine needs to invest not only in the army, but also, for example, in urban renewal, because such projects would help keep the economy running, create resources to finance the army and the Ukrainians possibly still want to return to their homeland. At least some.
Orysia Lutsevych of the Chatham House think tank in London said officials urgently needed to unlock Ukraine’s economic potential by restoring revenue-generating growth opportunities that could help defeat Russia. “Soldiers win battles, but the economy wins wars. It’s part of the same equation, she said.
