The commander also presented awards to other soldiers who, among other things, used mobile anti-aircraft weapons to neutralize the Russian Shahed drones and cruise missiles aimed at Kiev at the beginning of the new year. “I fired a rocket with a weapon,” says soldier Valentyn, describing how it is now important that his unit gets more weapons from the USA.
“When this enemy missile flew towards my homeland of Kiev, where my wife and children live, and could potentially have destroyed these lives, I felt good about neutralizing it. “I prevented the rocket from reaching its target,” explains Valentyn.
Air defense soldiers are part of a newly formed unit fighting near Kiev. “Our team consists of soldiers who cannot serve in other units due to injuries. But they all have combat experience,” says commander Serhiy Najev. Armed with Stinger man-portable anti-aircraft missile systems and Browning heavy machine guns (procured from the United States), his unit shot down eight of the seventeen Shahed drones and 11 of the 48 cruise missiles aimed at Kiev.
