New Delhi: India’s Foreign Ministry said the two countries are holding joint discussions in Delhi on the Maldivian government’s demand to withdraw the 88 Indian soldiers stationed on the island. According to government sources, the foreign ministers of both countries are discussing the Maldivian government’s move to withdraw its troops.
The Maldivian government had set a deadline to withdraw not only the ground troops but also the majority of the air force from the country. India has deployed Dornier aircraft, a helicopter and emergency security troops to over 1,000 islands in the country.
Ahead of the Non-Aligned Movement summit that began on Friday, Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar will meet Maldivian Foreign Minister Musa Sameer. The meeting was held by S. Media reported that Jaishankar called him “Frank”.
In recent days, calls for the withdrawal of the Indian army from the island have been strengthened by Maldives President Mohamed Muisu. Mohammad Muisu had asked the Indian Foreign Ministry to withdraw the 88 troops stationed on the island by March 15.
At the same time, government sources said that discussions were underway in the Maldives to accelerate development projects in the country with the support of India.
President Muhammad Muizu had urged China to step up its plans to send more tourists to the Maldives amid disputes with India over some issues. Muizu said China is his closest ally and plays a big role in the development of the Maldives.
