Unmanned aerial vehicles have played a leading role in the Turkish defense industry in recent years… Especially after the success of ANKA-S and TB-2, everyone is asking the question: “Will there be more?” This question has been asked, according to some recently steps taken will be answered. Platforms such as Aksungur, Akıncı, Kızılelma and ANKA-3 show that Ankara will make rapid progress in this area in the new period.
A detail that should not be overlooked at this point is the fact that a very valuable ecosystem is actually being created in the background while the platforms in question are being produced. One of the examples that comes to mind is that the ANKA-3 satellite communications systems, which recently launched for the first time, were developed entirely with local/national resources.
We spoke in detail with CTech Managing Director Cüneyd Fırat about this ANKA-3 flight, why it is important to produce these systems with national resources, and the offer they received from NATO.

One of the industry pioneers in the field of communication technologies
Fırat mentions that the company, which celebrates its 20th anniversary next year, has focused on electronic systems and especially communication technologies since its inception. He points out that they have a very valuable infrastructure for the design, development, production and maintenance of electronic systems.
He says that the company’s main theme is “communication technologies”, but he opens a critical bracket… At the same time, he emphasizes that they are working on cybersecurity and says: “Communication and cybersecurity are very intertwined topics.” “We have focused more on information security,” he shares.

“The size of the data to be transferred is increasing.”
As technology has evolved, the data sent from the platform to the center or from the center to the platform has also diversified. “So you have to find a way to send more and higher dimensional information very quickly,” says Fırat and continues:
“That’s what we do… We serve industries like defense, aerospace and telecommunications where the technology bar is very high indeed. The demands and expectations of companies here are at the highest level.
A significant part of our work in the communications sector lies in satellite communications. We have developed into one of the world’s leading companies in this field. We have been active in the field of satellite communications since our founding. If I describe it in its simplest form; We attempt to communicate between products within the satellite’s coverage area.
ANKA series unmanned aerial vehicles have been working with satellite communication systems developed and produced by CTech for many years. ANKA, ANKA-S, AKSUNGUR and finally ANKA-3… We provided satellite communications for all these platforms. “This gives us a much more advanced system than its counterparts with thousands of flight hours as a reference.”

“Dependency on foreign countries has fallen to a minimum”
CTech Managing Director Cüneyd Fırat emphasizes that these systems are an area where they depend on external sources before being manufactured with local/national resources. Recalling that in very specific areas such as defense or space, one can face various restrictions, he says: “We minimize foreign dependence in such systems.”
At this point he mentions an important detail and says: “Most products in this area are made to order.” Even if you are not subject to an embargo or restriction, sometimes it happens that the product is not available due to a problem in the supply chain arrives. This happened during the pandemic. Since we not only localized the systems, but also produced them in our country, we also gained a serious logistical advantage.”

“In addition to platforms, systems are also exported”
Defense industry products occupy an important place in Turkey’s export list. Unmanned aerial vehicles dominate among these. Cüneyd Fırat explains that with every platform sold, the national subsystems it contains gain export opportunities:
“The area is getting a platform from Turkey as a whole.” There may be very few people who say, “I will buy the platform from you, but I will have another choice as far as satellite communications or something else is concerned.” The However, disruption of this technological integrity can lead to serious difficulties, both technically and financially. Therefore, by selling these products, we also sell the satellite communication device. Another local company also sells its own system. Therefore, it becomes a valuable indirect export product for the industry.
Our systems are currently deployed alongside these platforms in multiple countries. Once they start using our systems, the satisfaction they feel makes them knock right on our door to address some of their other needs.”

We will take part in the NATO tender
Although we have made progress so far in unmanned aerial vehicles, Turkey is also making serious progress in unmanned land and especially unmanned sea vehicles. Cüneyd Fırat, who has high hopes for unmanned maritime systems, says: “We can achieve similar successes here as UCAVs.”
He mentions that CTech also produces very advanced communications systems for helicopters, jet aircraft, unmanned land vehicles and unmanned marine platforms.
The fact that they perform their duties smoothly in such a critical area has not gone unnoticed by NATO. As is well known, NATO prefers the most “advanced” systems for such purposes.
“We recently received an invitation from NATO for our products that work under secure satellite communications and electronic warfare,” says Fırat and “We are preparing for it… It is a very big deal that CTech’s satellite communications products in its own infrastructure NATO will be operated in the coming years. We believe that we will succeed in this too. He concludes his words by saying: “The coming years will bring great developments both for our country and for us.”
