Tragedy Strikes as Final Construction Worker’s Body Recovered from Key Bridge Collapse
BALTIMORE – After weeks of relentless recovery efforts, the body of the final construction worker has been retrieved from the wreckage site of the Key Bridge collapse. The tragic incident claimed the lives of six individuals, with Jose Mynor Lopez being identified as the last worker to be recovered.
Originally from Guatemala, Lopez had immigrated to Baltimore in search of a better life. Living in Dundalk with his wife and children, he was a hardworking individual determined to provide for his family.
The bodies of Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes, Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera, Maynor Yasir Suazo-Sandoval, Carlos Daniel Hernandez Estrella, and Miguel Angel Luna Gonzalez were previously recovered by rescue teams.
“With heavy hearts, today marks a significant milestone in our recovery efforts and providing closure to the loved ones of the six workers who lost their lives in this tragic event,” said Colonel Roland Butler Jr., Superintendent of the Maryland Department of State Police.
Maryland Governor Wes Moore expressed his condolences to all affected families. He emphasized the need to respect their privacy during this difficult period and assured them of ongoing support.
“We pray for Jose Mynor Lopez, his family, and all those who love him. It is with solemn relief that he will be reunited with his loved ones, and we ask again to respect the family’s request for privacy during this difficult time,” Moore said in a statement.
The devastating incident occurred when a container ship named Dali collided with Key Bridge during the late hours of March 26. As a result, eight workers repairing potholes on the bridge were thrown into Patapsco River. While two men were successfully rescued at the time, it took several weeks to recover all six victims.
“We join their families and loved ones in their grief and continue to pray for healing for them – and for all those who have suffered from this unfathomable tragedy,” expressed Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski.
Efforts Underway to Remove Ship Debris
Authorities have initiated controlled explosive operations as part of an extensive process known as “precision cutting” to remove a large section of Key Bridge currently atop the Dali. This step is crucial in safely refloating the ship.
“We knew that in order to safely remove Dali, it was going to require precision cutting”, shared Governor Wes Moore. “Right now, Dali still bears thousands of tons of steel on top of it.”
The Unified Command is hopeful that by the end of this week they will be able to successfully refloat Dali using these methods.
Plans Unveiled for Key Bridge Rebuild
Amid ship removal operations, the Maryland Transportation Authority recently held a virtual conference to discuss the upcoming phases of rebuilding Key Bridge. A staggering 1,700 individuals registered to take part in this event.
The current timeline estimates the opening of a new bridge by the fall of 2028, with an estimated cost close to $2 billion. Collaboration with federal agencies is well underway in order to expedite necessary permits.

The Democratic Party of Korea will accept the registration of candidates for the National Assembly Speaker primaries for two days starting from the 7th. A maximum of 5 rounds are expected. Representative Woo Won-sik (5th term) registered as a candidate on this day, Representative Jo Jeong-sik (6th term), Representative-elect Choo Mi-ae (6th term), and Representative Jeong Seong- ho (5th term) term), who voted to run, will register on the 8th. President-elect Park Jie-won (5th term) is considering whether or not to run for office. The Democratic Party’s National Assembly speaker primaries look different than before. The candidates emphasize that they are candidates for “deneutrality” and “awareness” (CEO Jae-myung Lee’s intention). As several candidates emerged, a run-off system was introduced.
Congressman Cho said in a press release that day: “We will lead the revision of the Constitution and reduce the number of presidential veto override seats from the current 200 to 180.” There are 192 pan-opposition seats in the 22nd National Assembly. The aim is to neutralize the presidential veto (right to request reconsideration) by lowering standards. Representative Cho’s major promises included moving the Board of Audit and Inspection to the National Assembly, strengthening the budget planning power of the National Assembly, reappointing the president for four years, and an interim evaluation system for the president . Rep. Cho said: “He is the right person to be the ‘most prepared president of the National Assembly’ due to his comprehensive capacity, including reformism, proven ability and cooperation with the Democratic Party, the majority party” . In other words, a neutral president was appointed who emphasized cooperation with the Democratic Party. Representative Cho has previously expressed his intention to actively use ex officio proposals.
Representative Woo held a press conference at the National Assembly after registering as a candidate and stressed that he would become the responsible president. Rep. Woo said, “The (president’s) veto still stands,” and added, “We will work with the people to overcome the (pan-opposition party’s) 8-seat deficit.” Representative Woo described himself as “Lee Jae-myung’s ‘valuable partner’ in social reform.” He noted that he served as campaign committee chairman for Lee Jae-myung’s presidential primary campaign. He mentioned Representative Lee’s trademark, the ‘grassroots society,’ and said: “I also believe that we need to move toward a ‘grassroots society’ that takes responsibility for people’s lives, rather than living as Sun”.
Congressman Woo appeared on CBS Radio this day and said, “As Speaker of the National Assembly, I will take a clear and firm position” regarding ‘Lee Chae Yang Myeong-ju’ (Itaewon disaster, death of Corporal Chae during the war). duty, Yangpyeong Expressway Gate, Ms. Kim’s receipt of luxury bags and suspicions of stock price manipulation). Congressman Woo said, “Even the voters are saying, ‘You need to fix this.’” He added: “If you don’t reflect public sentiment, you will be beaten with a stick.”
President-elect Choo and Congressman Jeong plan to register as candidates on the 8th. President-elect Chu appeared on SBS Radio on the 11th of last month and said: “(The president) is not neutral” and “(There will be) no such thing as just standing still while saying he is neutral.” Representative Jeong appeared on CBS Radio on the 23rd of last month and said, “We can’t do anything if we just maintain mechanical neutrality.” President-elect Park is gathering the opinions of those around her. An official on President-elect Park’s side said in a phone call that day: “We are listening to views on Park Jie-won’s role and whether there is a justification to run” and “the will to run is strong.”
The three candidates who have not registered as candidates all support the deneutrality and centralism of the Democratic Party. On the 1st, President-elect Park appeared on a YouTube channel and criticized President Kim Jin-pyo and former President Park Byeong-seok, who had emphasized neutrality and agreement, while swearing.
There is also criticism within the party of candidates who support mindfulness. A key party official told a reporter: “Representative Lee Jae-myung’s idea is that it would be nice if it was not a competition for ideas, but a competition to become a functioning National Assembly.” President Kim Jin-pyo appeared on MBN on the 5th and said of the candidates calling for deneutrality: “If you study a little more and look at the history of our Congress, the person who said these things will be ashamed of himself . “
The Democratic Party will decide its final candidate through internal primaries on the 16th. If no candidate receives a majority of votes in the first round, a runoff will be held between the first and second place finishers. The election of the President of the National Assembly will be held on the 5th of next month during the first plenary session of the 22nd National Assembly. Rep. Nam In-soon registered today as a candidate for vice president of the National Assembly.
