Third generation of Nissan’s bestseller in Europe.
TEST DRIVE: Nissan Qashqai e-Power Tekna+
The Nissan Qashqai e-Power is the self-powered electric car that doesn’t benefit from a single electric car advantage.

Nissan Qashqai e-Power is difficult to understand. Ok, there is a special hybrid solution where the gasoline engine basically just acts as a power generator to power the electric motor that powers the car. The advantage is a higher engine power and slightly lower consumption than the regular Qashqai, while on the negative side the high price, the low trailer weight and the lack of all-wheel drive are important.
The Qashqai has been Nissan’s best-selling car in Europe for several years and is likely to remain so for some time to come. However, the e-Power variant with emissions of 122 g/km is still so far away from the EU fleet target of 95 g/km that Nissan has to compensate significantly with electric cars in order to get below the mentioned 95 grams.
Costs extra
The question is whether Qashqai buyers are putting so much more into the pot to get so little in return! In Norway, the price difference between the e-Power Tekna+ and the corresponding “normal” Qashqai is a whopping NOK 42,100. With the e-Power variant, a lot of kilometers have to be covered in order to save the additional consumption of the standard car.
Even with Tekna+ and 4×4 activated, E-Power costs NOK 12,100 more. In my opinion, the only advantage of e-Power is the function of the e-pedal, which means that the car can be driven and braked using the accelerator pedal in most situations. It makes driving in urban environments easier and more comfortable.
Beaten by Toyota
Therefore, it makes sense to compare it with the recently launched and roughly the same size Toyota Corolla Cross, which has the same engine power (190 hp) and, on paper, uses roughly the same amount of gasoline as the Qashqai e-Power (0.53 Liter). / mile), which costs significantly less and also comes with all-wheel drive – and only that.
Nissan states the WLTP consumption as 0.54 liters/mile. My test consumption when driving very gently, alternating between highway, country road and city, was 0.60 liters/mile.

Well equipped
That doesn’t mean that I’m warning against taking a closer look at the Qashqai. Launched in 2022, the Mk 3 is just the right size for a compact family, offering above-average driving fun while being comfortable. Nissan has put a lot of emphasis on the interior, it doesn’t ooze cheap plastic like some competitors, the seats are good for sitting with massage in the front, there’s quite a lot of space in the back seat, the luggage compartment holds enough for most people and half The raised floor can be raised as a partition to the rest of the room and opens up a practical place for stacking shopping bags.
With the e-Power variant, a lot of kilometers have to be covered in order to save the additional consumption of the standard car
Getting into the back seat is particularly easy thanks to the doors, which open almost vertically to the vehicle. But the 40/60 split rear seatbacks and lack of a ski hatch make it difficult to transport skis in the car when passengers are in the back seat.
Four cameras
The design of the instrumentation is based on other Nissan models with a clear reflection of the information, with the most important information also being read in the head-up display on the windshield. Nissan conservatively relies on a separate and clear panel for the air conditioning. The programmatic approach of the infotainment screen is easy to find without being a model. But the good resolution of the screen and the four-way camera coverage make parking the car very easy.
My Qashqai choice: 158 HP Tekna/Tekna+ with 4×4. An SUV with all-wheel drive will always be more attractive on the used market than one that only pulls on two wheels.
WE THINK
The Nissan Qashqai has many good features, but choose 4×4 over the e-Power variant.
