House Democrats Rally to Protect Speaker Mike Johnson
In a surprising turn of events, House Democrats came to the aid of Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) as a group of right-wing Republican hardliners attempted to oust him from his position. While this rescue mission has become increasingly common, Democrats made it clear that they wouldn’t let Johnson off easily.
The Significance
This dynamic between Democrats and Johnson will play a crucial role if the group of Republican hardliners moves forward with their plan. By crossing party lines and voting with Republicans on procedural matters related to Johnson’s foreign aid package, the Democratic Party showcased its determination to protect him from being overthrown.
- Democrats demonstrated their support for Johnson by voting in favor of his foreign aid package during House Rules Committee meetings and on the House floor.
- This departure from conventional norms marked a significant gesture on behalf of House Democrats.
- Notably, Democrats strategically delayed their votes on advancing the package until most Republicans had already cast their votes.
“It’s what we did for the debt ceiling … we were told to hold off until you get a signal,” said one Democratic lawmaker familiar with internal directives.
The delay aimed at highlighting that Republicans alone couldn’t pass it, revealing deep divisions within their party. “They wanted to make the point that it was Democrats that made it happen,” affirmed former House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.).
Including all Perspectives
- A non-disclosing Democrat shared anonymously: “We don’t want this to become a regular practice.”
- Democratic Representative Jim Himes (D-Conn.) celebrated the bipartisan coalition formed through this vote, stating, “I’m delighted because I never imagined that in the minority I might be part of a constructive, forward-moving, bipartisan coalition.”
- Representative Wiley Nickel (D-N.C.) highlighted the ongoing presence and influence of House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), saying that he has “outsized influence in everything that moves through the House.”
Looking Ahead
- The motion to vacate Speaker Johnson has long been anticipated. Some Democrats support this proposition, seeing it as an opportunity to display further Republican chaos.
- House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries remained tight-lipped regarding his stance on the potential motion. He stated, “At the appropriate time, we will have a conversation about how to deal with any hypothetical motion of vacate.”
“It was pretty obvious given the growing number of pro-Putin Republicans in the GOP…that this was going to require substantial Democratic participation,” Jeffries explained.
The Bigger Picture:
- For most Democrats witnessing these displays of Republican chaos and dysfunction serves a broader purpose: regaining their majority status in November.
“I think they’ve … shown that they’re not the party that should be in charge of making this place work,” declared Representative Scott Peters (D-Calif.).

US Vetoes UN Security Council Vote on Palestinian Membership
◀ Anchor ▶
Before this, the UN Security Council held a vote on admitting Palestine as a full member.
The United States once again exercised their veto and the bill was again rejected.
They supported Israel’s position that it cannot recognize Palestine as an independent state.
Reporter Lim Kyung-ah brings this news from New York.
◀ Report ▶
At the meeting on whether Palestine should be accepted as a full member of the United Nations, the United States exercised its veto as expected.
“Who’s against it?”
In order to pass the UN Security Council, at least nine out of 15 members must vote in favor and none of the five permanent members, including the United States, can vote against.
As a result of the vote, twelve countries, including Korea, supported it, with the United Kingdom and Switzerland abstaining, but the United States opposed it and it was ultimately rejected.
The reason was that Israel and the Palestinian Authority should engage in ‘direct’ negotiations.

“We have long been clear that no hasty action in New York (UN), however well-intentioned, will achieve the establishment of an independent state for Palestine.”
Palestine applied to become a full member of the United Nations in 2011, but the application was canceled after the United States exercised its veto, saying, “The parties should negotiate among themselves.”
As the war in the Gaza Strip continues for more than half a year, Palestine has again asked to join the United Nations as a full member for a ‘two state solution’ where Israel and Israel coexist as independent states.
The Palestinian Authority strongly condemned the United States, saying, “Although the United States supports the ‘two-state solution,’ it has revealed contradictions that prevent its implementation.”

“Will you give Israel the time it needs to seize Palestinian lands? Will you punish her by banishing and killing people?”
On the other hand, the Israeli side said, “We express our gratitude to the United States and President Biden.”
Despite recent upheavals, the US has once again revealed its will to support Israel, and attention is being paid to how it will affect public opinion in the US, which is getting worse gradually before the presidential election.
