Kai Zhuang, a 17-year-old from mainland China, studies at a high school in Riverdale, Utah, USA. Zhuang Kai was reported missing on December 28th. His parents in China told the school that Zhuang Kai had apparently been kidnapped and that the kidnappers were demanding a ransom.
Police said Zhuang Kai was “manipulated and controlled” by “cyber kidnappers” and mistakenly believed his family was under threat in mainland China. If he disobeyed, his family would be harmed. The case process fully corresponds to the typical pattern of “cyber kidnapping”: the “kidnapper” usually requires the victim to hide alone, provide photos of the kidnapping, and then provide them to the victim’s family to extort ransom money; The victim is also asked to obey. If the instructions are not followed, the family members will be harmed. Therefore, the victim usually follows the “kidnapper’s” instructions. At this point, both the victim and his family fall into the trap of mistakenly believing that the other has been robbed.
According to media reports such as ABC News in the US, on December 20 last year, Zhuang Kai bought camping equipment and isolated himself as requested by the “internet hijackers”.
The Riverdale Police Department worked with the FBI to determine Zhuang Kai’s whereabouts after he “disappeared.” After several days of searches, bank records, consumption records and cell phone call records were analyzed and it was determined that Zhuang Kai was alone on a hill near Brigham City, about 40 kilometers north of Riverdale City. The police found Zhuang Kai on December 31st.
“Due to Utah’s cold weather this time of year, we are particularly concerned for the victim’s safety and fear he may freeze to death at night,” Riverdale police said in a news release.
Police said an officer hiked up the mountain and found Zhuang Kai’s tent, which had no heat and contained “an electric blanket, a sleeping bag, limited food and water, and several cell phones.” The officer “contacted the victim in the tent and found him alive but cold and scared.” After Zhuang Kai was rescued, he “ordered a hot cheeseburger” and asked to contact his family.
Riverdale police said Zhuang Kai’s family transferred $80,000 to a bank account in China specified by the “kidnapper.”
Zhuang Kai’s host family in Riverdale initially didn’t know he was “missing” and heard his voice in the kitchen early in the morning.
It is understood that police in Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Anhui, Inner Mongolia, Qinghai and other places in China have previously issued information or warnings on cases of “virtual kidnapping” of foreign students. The amount of fraud ranged from 1 million yuan to RMB 15 million.
