Candidate who is perfect for the AKP: Ankara candidate has none
SCANDAL NECKLACE
After his comments, which served as an announcement of his candidacy, all eyes turned to Altınok’s political career. Altınok’s name entered politics through the tape scandal, the violence of the A-Team posing as moral guardians in Keçiören, and the waste of public resources. Altınok, who was elected mayor of Keçiören by the MHP in 1994, resigned from his party in 1999 and joined the Virtue Party. After the closure of the Virtue Party, Altınok was one of the founders of the AKP along with the innovative wing led by Abdullah Gül.
DAMAGE TO PUBLIC TOWER
Altınok was announced as the AKP mayoral candidate for Ankara Metropolitan Municipality in 2009. However, he soon announced his withdrawal from the candidacy. It was alleged that secret images taken in a hotel room with a woman were behind Altınok’s withdrawal from candidacy. When the images leaked online, Altınok lost his mayoral seat, which he had held for 15 years.
Altınok, who lost the race for mayor of Keçiören with BBP in 2014, became mayor of Keçiören after the elections in which he participated as an AKP member in 2019. Altınok came to the fore with many practices that waste public resources, especially Cumhuriyet Tower, which became a waste tower in the heart of Ankara in 2019-2023.
DIRTY WORK WITH THE A-TEAM
Altınok’s political career was also shaped by the A-Team working in Keçiören. Allegedly, Turgut Altınok, who was elected mayor by the MHP after the 1994 Ankara Keçiören local elections, founded an unofficial group called “A Team” that was subordinate to the municipality. The group, consisting mainly of idealists, acted as moral guardians in Keçiören. It became known to the public that Team A caused incidents such as “attacks on youth sitting in the park, both boys and girls, violence against those who drink alcohol and attacks on those who do not fast during Ramadan.”
The members of the A-Team, who were said to have “maintained public order and prevented immorality, alcohol and drug consumption” in the district, were commemorated with a death. In 1995, community center member Erdal Yıldırım was shot dead amid tensions between a group of alleged municipal employees and residents of the Ovacık neighborhood in Keçiören.

20 YEAR OLD GARBAGE TOWER
The Cumhuriyet Tower, which Turgut Altınok said will be “the tallest tower in Turkey,” was almost one of the “most expensive towers in Turkey.” The construction process of the tower, which turned into a snake story, was one of the most striking examples of the excessive use of public funds. A total of 60 Although it is expected to cost millions of TL to complete, the cost of the tower, which has not yet been delivered to the municipality as of January 2024, has exceeded 350 million TL.
