After the brutal attack and rape of a resident of a retirement home in Vienna-Wieden in October 2023, the 93-year-old woman has now died
The “Kronen Zeitung” reported this on Wednesday. The suspect, who was identified a month later, is still under investigation. No charges have yet been filed, as authority spokeswoman Nina Bussek said in response to an APA request.
93-year-old dies after rape and robbery in Vienna retirement home
The Vienna public prosecutor’s office is still waiting for a report that will also provide information about the danger of the 23-year-old Algerian. The then 92-year-old made a statement. “There is a transcript from the lady,” Bussek said.
The man gained access to the elderly woman’s living unit at around 6 p.m. on October 11th, attacked the victim and pinned the elderly woman to the bed. A sexual assault is said to have occurred as a result. The perpetrator then ransacked the room for valuables and tore jewelry and the watch from the woman’s body in order to flee with the loot. A nurse found the injured woman and alerted the rescue team and the police.
DNA evidence led to 23-year-old
DNA traces at the crime scene then led to a prisoner in Upper Austria who has been there since October 18th for car break-ins. In the 23-year-old’s Linz accommodation, the officers were finally able to find various stolen goods, such as jewelry and electronic items, which could be assigned to crime scenes in Linz and Vienna. This also included the stolen jewelry belonging to the 92-year-old from Vienna. The man has so far confessed to the attack in the federal capital.
There was no confirmation from the authorities about the death of the elderly woman. Their son contacted the “Kronen Zeitung” and reported that his mother had died three months after the attack. When contacted by the APA, the Board of Trustees of Vienna Pensioners’ Residences (KWP), as the home provider, did not want to confirm the resident’s death for data protection reasons.
Security for residents has been strengthened since the incident
The home provider, which offers accommodation, care and support to seniors in 30 houses in Vienna, has further expanded its existing security measures due to the crime.
“In the weeks after the incident, our social workers and psychologists offered increased support in all houses if necessary,” said the home authority. Since the fall, an additional package of measures has been put in place to ensure the safety of the home’s residents and is already having an effect.
Video surveillance was installed in the entrance area of all 30 houses. The first cameras were installed and put into operation at the beginning of November, and the roll-out was completed by Christmas. Employees in the houses were made aware of the topic of home visits in appropriate follow-up training. Since then, unknown people or people outside the house have been actively approached. In addition, cooperation with the district police was increased, and appropriate information events were held in the houses.
Since October 2023, the houses can only be entered via the main entrance during reception hours; all other entrances can only be opened from the outside with authorization – via a chip system. Outside reception hours, access to the house is only possible with a chip or by prior arrangement via the intercom. The issuance of access authorization has been regulated more strictly; relatives will only receive a temporary chip in justified exceptional cases, such as palliative care.
