The defending champion against the new Chinese star. The Australian Open women’s final was a magnificent event and a clash of styles: the power tennis of Aryna Sabalenka against the dynamic variation game of Zheng Qinwen.
Sabalenka had not lost a set heading into the final in Melbourne and had no intention of doing so in the final. The Belarusian quickly gained a break and pushed Zheng back with her powerful punches. The latter found no answer, Sabalenka quickly won the set 6:3.
The second set became pants made of the same fabric. Zheng quickly gave up her serve and a reckless Sabalenka stormed forward undeterred. After a hard-fought eighth game, she finished the final 6-2.
Sabalenka claims her second consecutive final victory at the Australian Open, her second career Grand Slam victory. At the age of 21, Zheng missed the chance to succeed Chinese legend Li Na, but has a great tournament to look back on. She also jumps to number 7 in the world rankings.
“I would like to congratulate Zheng on her great week,” Sabalenka then praised her opponent. “It hurts to lose a final but she will play a lot more. I’m so happy to win here again, it’s a dream to extend my title.”
“It’s my first final. Of course I think that’s a shame, but it was a great experience,” Zheng replied. “I think I could have done better today, but Sabalenka was very strong. I am sure there will be great things to come in the future.”
