An unusual accident occurred on Thursday night. In Poland, an oversized truck almost had a serious accident as it drove under an overpass that was still under construction.
According to Polish media reports, the truck carrying one of the wind turbine’s rotor blades was traveling on the S3 motorway between Wolin and Dargobądz when the accident occurred around 1 a.m. According to the police’s official statement, the almost 100-meter-long wind turbine blade got stuck at its highest point under one of the concrete beams of the overpass and then dragged it along. The heavy element fell, but fortunately it did not fall onto the truck’s cab, so no one was injured in the accident.
According to the Polish police, the driver was completely sober, so they believe that poor route planning was more likely to be responsible for the accident. According to the regulations, oversized shipments are transported at night, on closed routes and with an escort. This is also because no one else was traveling on this route at the time.
According to experts, it is quite conceivable that in this case they did not count on exact values, that is, based on the preliminary calculations, they assumed that the turbine blade would fit under the overpass. It is also possible that the trailer with the turbine wing should have been lowered before the transfer, but this was neglected, allowing the highest part of the load to touch the external reinforced concrete beam.
According to the Polish trucking portal 40ton.net, the parameters of construction work related to highway No. 3 have been frequently changed recently, so it is easy for the driver and the route planner to be not responsible for this. At the same time, the force of the impact is clearly demonstrated by the fact that another concrete beam also moved, but fortunately it did not fall on the truck.
