This year marks the 40th anniversary of the publication of Selected Micro-Novel. With the fresh New Year’s first issue of the magazine ahead of me, I can’t help but respect the fact that the literary ecology and reading methods have changed, but I still maintain my original intention and move forward persistently. For a long time, micronovels or short novels were rather out of place in the literary landscape and received little attention, but in recent years they have become increasingly popular on all sides and are very popular with readers. This is inseparable from the ideological and artistic development of the creation of micronovels, and it is also inseparable from the maintenance and support of a number of periodicals. Since its founding in 1984, the “Micro-Novel Selection” sponsored by Baihuazhou Literature and Art Publishing House has always adhered to the “reader-centered” policy and the publishing principle of “close to time, close to reader, close to life”. , and is committed to making it accessible to more readers. What an excellent micronovel Be Seen. As the first issue of the new year, this issue of “Selected Micro Novels” shows the special characteristics of the pursuit of progress in the areas of inheritance, innovation, communication and interaction, whether in terms of editorial philosophy, column settings, ideological content or artistic style.
The continuing legacy of an excellent traditional cultural spirit
The first issue of “Selected Micro-Novel” in the new year takes the continuous legacy of excellent traditional cultural spirit as a common thread.
As the opening work, Zhang Jianchun’s “Half a Book” reflects the living conditions and spiritual aspirations of people in a time of material scarcity, as the protagonists Nanzi and Changjin make different decisions about potatoes and books. From the main part of the novel, the focus of the narrative is on the characters’ spiritual quest. Nanzi immersed herself in the world of half a book and experienced herself as a writer. At the end of the novel, Chang Jin did not eat the potatoes alone, but let them become “potato mothers” to help the family survive the years of starvation. This supplementary narrative is not only meaningful, but also enriches and clarifies the original blank lines, highlighting the traditional wisdom of the Chinese nation in balancing material survival and spiritual pursuit.
Next, Guqin’s “Water-like Moonlight” promotes the traditional virtues of benevolence, righteousness and integrity through the choice and contrast between “I” and “Father”, between justice and profit. “I” secretly learned the recipe for cooking mutton at Wangji Mutton Pot Restaurant, and despite the boss’s attempts to persuade him to stay, he decided to find another way out and try it alone. “Father” shamed “I” with his story of accumulating money during the famine years. The author does not fall into the binary opposition that is common in character design and narrative structure in micronovels. Even if the betrayal of the “I” seems insignificant in the face of the selflessness of the “Father”, what “I” does is, ” “I” “Father” led a happy life in his later years, in keeping with the traditional virtue of ” filial piety and love for relatives”.
In addition, Yu Debei’s “Long Shot” calls people to rebuild trust, reconsider old friendships and regain sincerity through the estrangement between a 70-year-old cerebral infarction patient and his son and the interactions with three old friends, Chen Zhenlin. “Looking for Flight” promotes the traditional virtue of selfless love through the story of the couple Zhang Xiaoyong and Juanzi who seek benefactors and convey love; Tang Boqing’s “Father and Sweater” expresses fatherly love through the story of a father who takes apart a sweater and has his son knit it for him. Mountains of emotions.
The Chinese nation has always had outstanding traditional virtues such as justice and welfare, upholding justice and promoting good, as well as caring for the elderly and loving relatives. Whether it is Nanzi’s spiritual pursuit of immersing himself in half a book in “Half a Book”, Chang Jin’s righteous deed of using potatoes to help his family survive the years of hunger, or the “needs” of “Father ” After me”. In Moonlight Like Water, the warnings about “transparency” and “be tough” or the touching friendship, love and familial affection in works like “Long Shot” reflect the first issue of the new year of “Selected Micro Novels” Explore the spiritual connotation of excellent traditional culture and highlight the uniqueness of the Chinese nation. Consciousness and striving for spiritual identity.
The innovative pursuit of aesthetic art in micronovels
Micronovels focus on finding meaningful ideological connotations in a short and compact structure with novel ideas and concise language. Known for its micro, dense, novel, and strange characteristics, this aesthetic artistic feature is both an advantage and a limitation of micronovels, making it difficult to depict grand scenes of time and space, complex plots, and rich characters. The first issue of “Selected Micro-Novel” in the new year also deliberately focuses on innovation in aesthetic art.
Liang Youlao’s “My Mother’s Train” strives to break through the limitations of style and style and attempts to accommodate a broader lifeworld within a limited spatial structure. The novel tells the story of “Mother’s” life and emotional psychology from birth to old age from the first person perspective, from thinking about trains to driving trains, from gas turbine locomotives to high-speed trains, covering 87 years of life in less than 1,500 words. Span and changing times. Mo Xiaotan’s “Scream” consciously explores the art of storytelling, applies the avant-garde technique of meta-narrative to the creation of micronovels, and has the author and narrator constantly appear in the text to discuss narrative questions. The “screaming” of the old lady living alone in “Xingfuli” reminded the old captain of the incident in which Yu Meixiang’s son was kidnapped. However, the person concerned denied that the “screaming” was related to him, and the old captain also cursed. In “Xingfuli”, Yu Meixiang is not instead of Yu Meixiang, who lost her child, the narrative always leaves gaps at crucial points. The author deals with a previously familiar topic of “combatting human trafficking” by the police with new ideas.
In addition, Zhang Jianchun’s “Half Book”, Yu Debei’s “Long Lens”, Xu Junsheng’s “Fate” and Ma Yongqing’s “The Farm Love of a Second-six Worker” have largely broken the tradition of micronovels. The structural framework draws on the narrative experience of novels and the artistic devices of film and television montage to express broader themes and content over a longer period of time and space. Guqin’s “Water-like Moonlight”, Shen Ping’s “Cormorants”, Li Haiyan’s “Broken Tree” and Chen Zehua’s “Eternal Life” have all expanded the traditional expression of micronovels to a certain extent, drawing on poetry and prose. Experience, which expresses deeper ideological themes through artistic means of symbols and metaphors.
Communication and interaction between editors, authors and readers
As a reader- and market-oriented literary publication, “Micro-Novel Selection” has always pursued an open and integrative attitude. While maintaining its individual style, it is at the same time committed to continuous improvement and increasing the quality of publication through communication and interaction between different groups.
The first issue of the new year begins with a “word from the editor” that is open and honest with readers. Editor-in-Chief Zhang Yue looked back on the magazine’s development and expressed concern about the current fragmentation and superficial reading. He imaginatively constructed the reader’s dialogue and the editor’s response: “Are you still reading Selected Micro-Fictions?” I’m still reading it, and I always have been reading it. If so, then we are serious about running the magazine. The greatest praise is the greatest motivation for us to continue.” The editor’s sincerity is revealed between the lines.
The first issue of the new year also features an ensemble of voices including luminaries, emerging talent, experts and readers. In the “Writers in Progress” column, micronovelist Yu Debei used the title “Pick it up and put it down” to communicate with readers about his current creative situation, experiences and plans; Micronovel researcher Liu Haitao commented on Debei’s new work “Songcheng Characters” Briefly” gave a wonderful review. The “College Online” column specifically invites micronovel critic Xia Yang as a moderator and shows readers the writing style of college campuses. Selecting two outstanding works, Ran Jinming’s “Falling Point” and Chen Zehua’s “Eternal Life”, two emerging authors will share their writing concepts, conception processes and experiences in the form of “Creative Notes”. In these two columns, editors, authors and readers are “present” to experience the active dynamics and promising prospects of current micronovel creation.
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the publication, the “I and “Selected Micronovels”” section was opened in the first issue of the new year to enable new and old authors and readers to look back on the past together. In “My Literary Path: Beginning with the Study of Selected Micronovels,” veteran author Yan Qi candidly recalls the encouragement and guidance that “Selected Micronovels” gave him when he first learned to write. Lan Xi, a long-time reader, vividly described the scene when he first encountered “Selected Micro-Novel”: “I was immediately attracted. On that cold winter night in the library, filled with the smell of books, it was like meeting a person with an interesting soul. “Friends, we meet so late,” the simple words are full of a long-lost warmth.
Successful literary publications are the same as excellent literary creations: only through continuous learning, communication, integration and interaction can they maintain their youth and vitality.
