The mayor of the southern Russian city of Voronezh, Vadim Kstenin, declared a state of emergency on Tuesday after what authorities said was a Ukrainian drone attack, Reuters reported this morning.
Russia has an air base near the city of Voronezh. Media there report that some of the Sukhoi Su-34 fighter-bombers that Russia used to bomb Ukraine are stationed there.
The Russian news portal Shot reported that at least 15 explosions were heard near the air base. People from at least one apartment building were evacuated to a nearby school after the drone debris caught fire and blew out windows, Mayor Kstenin said. “The declaration of a state of emergency in the city will allow for quick repairs,” he added.
Voronezh Region Governor Alexander Gusev stated that the drone’s debris injured the girl when it hit the residential building. The Russian Defense Ministry then said it had destroyed five drones and shot down three others overnight over the Voronezh region, which borders Ukraine.
Voronezh, a city of more than a million people, is located about 250 kilometers from the border with Ukraine and is the administrative center of the region.
The ministry also said the defense shot down four drones in Russia’s nearby Belgorod region. As usual, Ukraine did not comment on the interventions.
