The player has created a mod for Garry’s Mod that features what is probably the largest map in the history of gaming.
One of the main attractions of Garry’s Mod is the crazy things players can achieve in this production. A perfect example of this was provided by a fan nicknamed Alexandrovich, who created a map of dizzying size.
The map, called the 1:1 Multiverse, consists of 2,048 sections, corresponding to the size of the known universe. The mod therefore offers a map that is over two thousand times larger than the known cosmos. The entire space is filled with images of multi-colored stars and galaxy clusters, and the author plans to add star systems in the next update. Of course, this is all oversimplified, but it’s still overwhelming.
So if you are a player who always complains about the small size of maps in games, then 1:1 Multiverse is a project for you because here you will never reach the end of the map.
The map is obviously more of an experiment than something you can play, but you have to admit that it is impressive. Photo source: Alexandrovich.
It won’t surprise anyone that the mod requires a lot of RAM. 12GB is the bare minimum, and the creator recommends at least 32GB for relatively comfortable gaming and 64GB or preferably 128GB for ideal performance. Interestingly, the modification itself does not take up much space, as it weighs only 522 MB.
You can download 1:1 Multiverse from Steam Workshop. In order for the project to work, the mod “InfMap – Infinite Map Base” is also required, which removes many size restrictions for maps and allows you to create them at any scale. Optionally, it’s also worth installing the InfMap Helper Tools, because with them you can, among other things: Teleport anywhere in the 1:1 multiverse, making exploration easier.
It’s fascinating how the 1:1 size of the multiverse was achieved. Even with InfMap – Infinite Map Based – source engine maps have their limitations. The author got around this in an interesting way – he used fluid portals to move the player from one part to another, and the clever use of shaders makes it possible to hide what is happening, creating a convincing illusion.
Garry’s Mod has been available exclusively on PC since 2006. Despite its age, it’s still a very popular title – yesterday, at the hottest moment of the day, 30,236 people were playing it simultaneously on Steam.
