The Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs has presented an important pension reform that will significantly expand the entitlement to widows’ and widowers’ pensions for citizens of the Czech Republic. While the entitlement to this pension was previously limited to two years, the new proposal extends this period to up to five years. Furthermore, this change will have retroactive effect and could therefore also affect those who have been widowed within the last twelve years.
Additional payment and new rules
An essential part of the reform is also the possibility of retroactive payment of survivors’ pensions for the period from 2012. The new adjustment aims to address the injustices and inequalities in the system that affected some widows and widowers before 2012. The proposal assumes that if the new adjustment is successful, the right to retirement can be extended.
Who is entitled to widow’s and widower’s pension?
Only spouses, not life partners, are entitled to this pension. In addition, certain requirements regarding working life and pension insurance must be met. Citizens who wish to apply for a widow’s or widower’s pension must contact the local branch of the Czech Social Security Agency (ČSSZ). The reform will also allow for the retroactive payment of survivors’ pensions for the period from 2012 to the present, thereby correcting inequalities in the system.
Duration of pension receipt
The basic duration of a widow’s or widower’s pension was traditionally set at one year. After this period, pension payments are only possible in a few exceptional cases:

How long can you receive a pension?
If you find yourself in one of the situations mentioned above, you are entitled to a widow’s or widower’s pension for the duration of this situation. For example, if you care for a child or a dependent parent, you can receive a pension until the end of this care. However, if you receive a pension at the same time as another pension, such as an old-age pension, the full amount of both pensions is not collected.
Economic impact and significance
The expansion of the right to widow’s and widower’s pension is a welcome step that can help many citizens who find themselves in a difficult financial situation after the death of their partner. The new rules are intended to better meet the current needs and demands of citizens of the Czech Republic.
Diploma
The reform of widows’ and widowers’ pensions in the Czech Republic aims to significantly simplify and expand entitlement to this important social benefit. With the new regulations and the possibility of repayment, Czech citizens can look forward to more stable and long-term support in the event of the loss of their life partner.
