“Busy, busy, busy” is a common response when asked how someone is doing. That’s exactly why it’s good to plan a day every now and then without everything, ask psychologists. Suzan Kuijsten, stress sociologist and founder of The School of Stress, also emphasizes the importance of such a lazy day.
Why a relaxing day is so important
According to Kuijsten, the stress system is our largest source of energy. It is not for nothing that people often react forcefully when they are under great stress, for example when combat or combat mode is activated or there is a deadline to meet. Kuijsten: “All of our organs use energy. Your heart, your brain, your kidneys: they all require a certain dose of energy. When we find ourselves in a stressful situation, the stress system kicks in and drains some ‘departments’ of a little energy.”
That’s completely fine, but then the body has to switch back to normality so that the body’s processes are constantly supplied with energy again. And to achieve this, recovery is extremely important, says the stress sociologist. “The body needs to return to normal after a stressful situation, but we humans are very bad at this these days,” says Kuijsten. Due to, among other things, the enormous stimuli of our phones, hectic family life, important jobs and the pressure to perform, many people are unable to recover properly. According to Kuijsten, we can take inspiration from top athletes: “They have known for a long time that it is not the athlete who trains the hardest, but the one who also has the greatest ability to recover.” ”
Listen to your body
And that’s why a relaxing day like this is so good. When you think of the word “lazy” you might think of laying in bed all day, but it actually means not having to do as much. According to Kuijsten, it’s all about listening to your body. The following applies to recovery: A low heart rate and avoiding a lot of stimuli is important so that your body can recover.
Kuijsten: “Scrolling through Instagram on the couch may sound like a lazy activity, but all that stimulation is actually hard work for your brain.” Suitable activities? Going into nature, drinking tea with friends, cooking, walking around the block… However, it is also important to listen to your own body. If cooking stresses you out rather than calms you down, this is not a relaxing activity for you. “So listen to your body,” says Kuijsten, “and keep your heart rate low to ensure optimal recovery.”
