The Catalans expect a Saint George 2024 with more flowers than ever (and traffic cuts too, it must be said). Because yes, flowers are the protagonists of this celebration. The Catalans They will give away 7 million roses during this year’s celebration, 20% more than last year and the highest figure since the pandemic. But when will this happen? The celebration will land this Tuesday April 23, 2024with the flowers and books as the two great elements of the day. The thing about flowers has to do with a legend that circulates through Catalonia.
It is said that a dragon resided in Montblanc that made life impossible for men and beasts. The inhabitants then decided to choose a person to sacrifice. The election was by lottery and, at one point, the chosen one was the king’s daughter. However, the “appearance of a beautiful knight” prevented such a sacrifice from being carried out. In fact, he himself faced the dragon and ended his life. The legend says that of that slaughter spilled a river of blood that became a rose bush with red flowersthe same ones that are given away every Sant Jordi.
Why books are given away on Sant Jordi
The truth is Saint George It is linked to books by another festival that was promoted by a Valencian writer, Vicent Clavel Andrés. This man, who lived in Barcelona, proposed the idea before the Official Book Chamber of Barcelona. Dedicate a day to books.
The The chosen date was October 7, 1926.but a few years later changed to April 23 to coincide with the deaths of writers Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare – although they did not really die on this date – as well as the birth or death of Josep Pla (1981), Maurice Druon (1918), K. Laxness (1902) , Vladimir Nabokov (1899) or Manuel Mejía Vallejo (1923). Since then, at an international level, Book Day is also celebrated on April 23.
The celebration was very well received in Catalonia and publishers began to use this date to present the latest news, especially those written in Catalan. On the other hand, the tradition was established for couples to give each other roses and books. At first, men received books and women received roses. But now the exchange has nothing to do with gender. The holiday has evolved and both genders receive both books and roses.

Xóchitl Gálvez requests to cancel AMLO’s morning meeting
After three hours of a closed-door meeting with the General Council of the INE, Xóchitl Gálvez and the leaders of the opposition alliance leave. They requested that the “morning” be canceled due to the “incontinence” of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to support Claudia Sheinbaum, and that the National Electoral Institute (INE) disseminate an information campaign to clarify that social programs do not belong to any party .
The opposition presidential candidate, Xóchitl Gálvez, and the leaders of the PAN, PRI and PRD, met behind closed doors for three hours and 15 minutes with nine of the 11 members of the General Council of the National Electoral Institute (INE), headed by the Presidential Counselor, Guadalupe Taddei, to whom they requested the suspension of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s “morning” conferences, while the electoral campaigns last.
In a press conference, accompanied by the PAN member Marko Cortés, the PRI member Alejandro Moreno and the PRD member Jesús Zambrano, the presidential candidate explained that before the electoral advisors she explained that the daily conference has served the president to illegally promote his candidate Claudia Sheinbaum.
“We have asked that the ‘morning sessions’ be cancelled, given that the president is incapable of responding to the calls of the INE to stop affecting equity in this race”
Xóchitl Gálvez said that since “morning” terrible damage has been caused to her by pointing her out as corrupt and dishonest, when “I have no lawsuit, no lawsuit, I have nothing. (…) As a businesswoman they want to attribute things to me that from a legal point of view there is nothing. I have paid taxes, my contracts that I obtained or managed to obtain from the government “They are totally legal, transparent contracts and the damage that was caused to me was the feeling that I stole that money,” he reproached.
Xóchitl Gálvez reported that the request to cancel the “mañanera” will be submitted to the general council of the INE.
He highlighted that, during the meeting, which was attended only by counselors Rita Bell and Arturo Castillo, who are on commission outside of Mexico City, he also requested that the INE undertake an information campaign to clarify to citizens that social programs do not They belong to no political party and no one can condition them in exchange for their vote.
The candidate said that the INE informed her that it will promote a campaign starting next week.
“They (the councilors) told us that they already have a campaign that begins on April 15 (…) and in that sense we have asked that the issue of social programs be specified. We will be very attentive”he pointed out.
“That there be a campaign where it is key that social programs do not belong to any party, that it be made clear that it is an electoral crime to make use of social programs. What’s more, there is unofficial preventive detention for this issue”Gálvez stressed.
At the press conference in the lobby of the INE, he revealed that he also asked the electoral advisors that the Institute provide security to the candidates to the extent of its powers.
“On the issue of security it was made very clear that work will be done jointly, obviously within the powers and capabilities of the INE. We are not asking to do anything that the INE cannot develop or implement”he pointed.
