Source: Deník Almost as many people on our planet as the population of the United States of America suffer from color blindness, according to estimates by the organization Color Blind Awareness. “This hereditary anomaly cannot be treated, but most patients are not aware of it because they do not know any other color perception,” says Karolína Skorkovská, chief physician of the Department of Eye Diseases and Optometry at St. Anna University Hospital in Brno. Denik explained.

“Congenital color blindness is an inherited color disorder vision, which mainly affects men. “We distinguish between green color perception disorder (deuteranopia or deuteranomaly), red color (protanopia or protanomaly) and blue color (tritanopia or tritanomaly),” said Skorkovská.
However, this does not mean that colorblind people perceive the world in black and white. “Most often, patients find it difficult to distinguish between red and green and, due to the admixture of these colors, between blue and violet or pink and gray.” “A situation in which a person perceives the world around him in black and white is possible for example, with achromatopsia, a hereditary disease of the retina that is fortunately rare,” said Skorkovská.

However, in her experience, it is impossible to say exactly what these people see instead of colors that they cannot distinguish. “The patients themselves cannot describe it,” noted an expert from the Brno hospital. Color blind because most people have never seen anything else.
However, there are also cases where people who do not suffer from a hereditary anomaly have problems distinguishing colors. “Acquired color perception disorders can be the result of diseases of the macula (the sharpest visual point on the retina) or the optic nerve and are usually only expressed by a change in the hue of a certain color,” explains Skorkovská.
