New year, new opportunities and new games. We’ve had a year that will go down in history for many as one of the greatest gaming years in recent memory. Baldur’s Gate 3, Resident Evil 4 Remake, Super Mario Bros. Wonder and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom are just some of the highlights of the year that lies behind us.
Now that we’re done picking the best games of the year and our personal favorites, it’s time to look ahead to a year that can quickly get just as intense, starting with some real treats.

Can The Lost Crown Prince of Persia return to old heights?
Ubisoft
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown
Platform: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, Nintendo Switch, Windows
Release date: January 18th
It’s been so long since we last got a Prince of Persia game that many suspected the series was over. We actually have to go back to 2010 to find previous games in the series. This year, however, Ubisoft is taking us back to where it all began, to the side-scrolling dimensions.
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown bucks the Metroidvania trend with sprawling areas that you can explore and unlock one at a time. The main character Sargon gradually gains a number of skills that he can use to fight enemies. As in previous Prince of Persia games, here we also have the opportunity to manipulate time. If something goes wrong, you can turn back time to try again, but an interesting twist is that Sargon isn’t the only one who can manipulate time.

How long can you survive in The Last of us Part II?
Naughty dog
The Last of Us Part II Remastered
Platform: PlayStation 5
Release date: January 19th
One of January’s potentially biggest games isn’t exactly new. The Last of Us Part II was originally released in 2020, but now comes in a new edition for PlayStation 5. This edition comes with graphical improvements, full DualSense functionality and a new mode in which the only goal is to last as long as possible survive. We really liked the game when it was released for PlayStation 4:
“With The Last of Us Part II, Naughty Dog has created a game that is technically superior to most, while at the same time telling a personal story that I think really means something.” It’s a story about contradictions – between hate and Love, revenge and forgiveness – and it’s a story that constantly makes me feel and think an incredible number of different things. And The is a good thing.”

All ready for the prank or shame bench in Tekken 8.
Bandai Namco
Tekken 8
Platform: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, Windows
Release date: January 26th
It’s time for a new round in the pigsty with Chapter 8 of the legendary Tekken series. A multitude of highly trained fighters are once again ready to beat each other for the big gold medal. We tested the game a few months ago and if they can fix the laggy network mode, that should be a great thing:
“Stepping into the shoes of well-known personalities was almost like returning home, albeit with a few notable additions.” The new Heat mechanics in particular can have a big impact on the flow of combat: they can at first glance seem overwhelming – especially because they provoke such enormous aggression – but I think this is an exciting innovation that can enable many heated arguments. The game finally starts.

There will soon be new adventures with the wildest hair in the gaming world.
Sega
Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth
Platform: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, Windows
Release date: January 26th
After the success of Yakuza: Like a Dragon a few years ago, the Yakuza series experienced a solid resurgence worldwide and several games were released to great acclaim. Now the direct sequel to Lika a Dragon is on the way, and this game seems to escalate all the conflicts dramatically.
Now Ichiban travels to Hawaii in search of a mother he thought was dead, our old Yakuza hero Kiryu has cancer, and a bunch of old heroes and villains are visiting. Like Yakuza: Like a Dragon, the game features a turn-based combat system with a variety of jobs to choose from. Of course, there are a number of new side activities, including mini-games inspired by Crazy Taxi and Harvest Moon.

There’s fun for old lawyers again in Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy.
Capcom
Somehow
We don’t find many big games among the remaining games this month. The biggest on the list is probably Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy, which brings together a series of legal adventures in a neat little package.
The same goes for Another Code: Recollection, a collection of two remastered games originally released for Nintendo DS and Wii.
BlazBlue Entropy Effect is an exciting action game coming out of Early Access this month. Howl is something completely different and offers us a turn-based folk adventure in a hand-drawn style, coming to Xbox and PlayStation this month.
Laika: Aged Through Blood is a Metroidvania adventure that looks like it was taken straight from a cartoon. The game comes to the Switch after a few months on other platforms. If you can’t get enough of Metroidvania, Japanese indie game Touhou Luna Nights might be for you.
If the winter darkness gets too colorful, the horror game DreaOut 2 on Nintendo Switch might be a better choice.
That’s all for this time, have fun playing and happy new year.
