In recent years, second-hand purchases have become more and more common and it’s not inconceivable that there were several used gifts under the Christmas tree this year.
In a press release, Tina Jerstad, communications consultant at Tenerity, warns of fraud on the used market. Among other things, the company is committed to helping people who have fallen victim to fraud.
– Fraud in the used market is nothing new, but it is now happening in different ways than before. And the criminals are becoming more and more sophisticated. In hectic everyday life it can easily happen that you become inattentive. You simply quickly access your cell phone to complete a purchase or sale while you stir the pot and the kids argue. It can quickly become expensive, she says.
Warns about fraud
Jerstad points out that it’s not just buyers who are at risk of being scammed, but also when selling on the used market.
– The fraudsters know the systems well and have often collected a lot of information about you. They can also use details they find on social media. This way you will be easier to manipulate into doing what they want.
The communications consultant points out that it often happens that the seller is tricked into paying the shipping costs.
– There are several creative stories. Some say they want to buy a car for their daughter who lives in Denmark, others say they cannot use the payment solutions in the app because they live abroad. Long, complicated stories are a warning sign.
Warns: – Coming to your home
In recent years there has been a flood of various fraud attempts on all channels. Earlier this year, DinSide wrote that this led to major banks and the police joining forces in a large-scale anti-fraud campaign.
Tenerity has previously stated that the number of people whose accounts have been emptied due to BankID fraud has increased tenfold since 2020.
Tips:
- If an offer sounds too good to be true, it often is.
- Do not accept dialogues or payments outside of the established platform.
- Don’t believe in unbelievable stories. Will it be complicated? Drop it.
- Don’t be afraid to be rude. Find another buyer or seller.
- If you become suspicious of someone you are trading with, check how long they have been using the platform and what reviews they have received.
- Be careful when logging into different websites using your username and password.
- Be very skeptical when signing up with BankID.
- Never give out credit card numbers, social security numbers or other sensitive information to strangers.
- Stop and think about it. Don’t be stressed by the opponent trying to get to the finish line quickly.
- If you notice someone behaving inappropriately, report it in the app or contact customer service.
- Have you logged in with BankID? Call the bank immediately and ask for help. Check your insurance.
- Have you been scammed? Report the relationship.
