Four minutes before the end of regular time, Franck Kessie was able to equalize with a penalty. No goals were scored in extra time, after which the game had to be decided on penalties. The Ivorians scored cleanly, while Moussa Niakhaté missed one for Senegal. Kessie, who had already forced extra time, scored the decisive penalty and once again became the nation’s hero.
Union midfielder Lazare Amani was not substituted for Ivory Coast. Simon Adingra (ex-Union) and Christian Kouame (ex-Anderlecht) were replaced by new coach Emerse Faé, who replaced Frenchman Jean-Louis Gasset on an interim basis, who was fired after the group stage. After two defeats and one win, Ivory Coast quickly qualified for the round of 16 as one of the best third teams. Senegal won their three group games.
“You are corrupt,” Krépin Diatta said to the referees after the game. “Just keep an eye on the Africa Cup of Nations. Do you give them a fine if you don’t even watch the video? What an insult. They killed us.”
