Michael Vanthourenhout came second at the World Cup race in Benidorm last Sunday. The European champion from Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal only had to put up with Wout van Aert and that after a particularly short night.
Because Vanthourenthout was in action in the Exact Cross in Zonnebeke on Saturday. The 30-year-old rider crossed the finish line first and then had to strengthen himself for the World Cup in Benidorm.
“It wasn’t easy getting out of bed for four hours and then catching a flight, but I had good legs and a good day. “Maybe I should get up at four o’clock every weekend,” laughed Vanthourenhout to the assembled press after the Spanish cross.

Due to a crash by Wout van Aert on the last lap, Vanthourenhout still seemed to have a chance of winning the final in Spain. How does he look back on it?
“On the last lap I had the feeling that I was going a little too fast on the climb. I was thinking about second place, but then I saw Van Aert crash near the bars and I started believing in it again. But it was too short to the finish.”
