According to an American study, hearing-impaired people who wear hearing aids live longer.
Inspired by a previous study that showed hearing loss shortens life expectancy, researchers at the University of Southern California examined the effects of hearing aids on people’s life expectancy.
Researchers analyzed data from about 10,000 people with hearing loss from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 1999 and 2012 and contacted them again to ask about their current health status.
Of these, 1,863 reported hearing loss and 237 reported regular use of hearing aids.
The study found that people with hearing loss who wore hearing aids were 24 percent more likely to live longer.
Dr. Janet Choi, lead author of the study, said these results suggest that hearing aids may have a protective effect on people’s health and prevent premature death.
The results of the research were published in the journal The Lancet Healthy Longevity.
