The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has decided that all Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft are banned from flying until the manufacturer provides detailed information about the incident involving the Alaska Airlines plane.
“In the name of the safety of American travelers, the FAA is suspending flights on the Boeing 737 MAX 9 until comprehensive inspections and maintenance are performed and inspection data is verified,” the FAA said.
On Friday, the FAA said it planned to increase oversight of Boeing’s quality control measures, including the 737 MAX production line and suppliers.
On January 5, shortly after takeoff, an Alaska Airlines plane with 171 passengers and six crew members on board fell out in place of an unnecessary emergency exit. The plane returned to Portland Airport and made an emergency landing. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident.
Since then, the FAA has suspended 171 Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft from flying pending inspection. This has caused disruptions in the operation of hundreds of flights. Alaska Airlines, for example, which has 65,737 MAX 9 aircraft, said it was canceling about 110 to 150 flights per day through Tuesday.
Boeing 737 MAX aircraft were not allowed to carry passengers for a long time following tragic plane crashes in 2018 and 2019.
