Revealing Prehistoric Monuments in Ireland
A recent discovery using lasers has unveiled a multitude of previously unknown prehistoric monuments, including five rare ones, concentrated in a stretch of farmland in the Irish countryside.
Uncovering History with Lidar Technology
Archaeologists in Baltinglass, County Wicklow, eastern Ireland, utilized lidar (light detection and ranging) to identify these monuments. Lidar involves an aircraft flying overhead while emitting laser pulses towards the ground, which bounce back to create a detailed map of the landscape.
Exploring Ancient Occupations
The research area dates back to the Early Neolithic period (around 3700 B.C.) and the Middle to Late Bronze Age (1400 to 800 B.C.). A study published in the journal Antiquity highlighted the significance of this discovery in bridging the gap during the Middle Neolithic era.
Unveiling Rare Monuments
Despite damage from agricultural activities, lidar technology revealed intricate 3D models of the landscape adorned with various structures, including rare cursus monuments. These large-scale earthwork enclosures, with possible ritual significance, form the largest cursus cluster in Ireland and Britain.
Surprising Discoveries
Lead researcher James O’Driscoll from the University of Aberdeen expressed astonishment at the unexpected findings of additional cursus monuments. These discoveries challenge previous notions and shed light on the rich historical landscape of Ireland.
Impressive Monumental Structures
The monuments, ranging from 492 to 1312 feet in length, showcase the remarkable craftsmanship of ancient builders who lacked modern tools. The sheer scale and complexity of these structures reflect the dedication and resources invested in their construction.
Multifaceted Purposes
Experts believe these monuments served various functions, including connections to solar events, agricultural practices, and ceremonial pathways for the deceased. The alignment of four cursus monuments with the summer solstice highlights the intricate relationship between ancient rituals and celestial events.
Insights into Neolithic Communities
These monumental sites offer valuable insights into the lives of Neolithic communities, particularly their transition to farming practices. The monuments symbolize the central role of agriculture in shaping the cultural and social fabric of these early societies.
Future Research Endeavors
Future investigations will involve analyzing soil samples to gain a deeper understanding of the flora and fauna present during the Early Neolithic period. This research aims to further unravel the mysteries surrounding these ancient monuments and the communities that built them.

How were the beginnings of the business?
The company arose in the city of Río Cuarto, in the province of Córdoba, and was forged from the enthusiasm of selling a product that adds to our society and being able to generate its own online sales business for the entire country. This is how we began to investigate what options existed to create from scratch and we opted for a sustainable product in the kitchen sector, our ecological wrappers that replace plastic wrap.
What are the products you provide to the public?
Authoritarians don’t like this
The practice of professional and critical journalism is a fundamental pillar of democracy. That is why it bothers those who believe they are the owners of the truth.
Our product is an ecological, biodegradable packaging that replaces the use of plastic wrap and also allows food to be preserved for much longer. Foods such as vegetables, cheeses, leftovers, fruits and, thus, prolong their duration over time.
It is a product to keep inside the refrigerator or outside it. We sell this product at retail through our online store www.filenna.mitiendanube.com and local fairs in our city.
At the same time, we carry out wholesale sales of our generic packaging (with our logo) and personalized ones with the client’s logo so that they can resell them or for their own internal use.
How do you project your brand in the medium term?
We would like to be able to reach more countries, generate strategies to continue making sales abroad and for more people to have the possibility of choosing ecological options for their kitchens. Also, being able to specify product ideas that we plan to launch.
What are your differentials in the sector?
Something that we always proposed, studying the competition that exists, which is not much, is to be able to offer personalized packaging that contains the product and protects it from external agents. In addition, packaging that does not generate more pollution and follows the brand’s ecological guidelines.
If you were starting over, what would you do differently?
If we were starting over, we would have liked to act sooner with some strategies that gave us a lot of growth, such as the implementation and launch of the online store.
What did you discover about your product over time?
The most shocking discovery was that this product not only brings benefits to the planet due to its ecological nature but also benefits the home economy.
By preserving food in good condition for much longer, it reduces the waste of spoiled food due to not consuming it on time. Also, it allows you to make a larger purchase, since the duration of the supplies is long.
