Asia Faces Increasing Climate-Related Disasters
No other region on Earth experiences more climate, weather, and water-related disasters than Asia, as highlighted in the latest report by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The 2023 State of the Climate in Asia report released today emphasizes the escalating risks in the region.
Impact of Climate Change in Asia
Climate change intensifies various disasters globally, with Asia being particularly vulnerable due to its rapid warming compared to the global average. The surge in greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels contributes significantly to this phenomenon, leading to more frequent and severe events like heatwaves, flooding, and storms.
“The report’s conclusions are sobering.”
WMO Secretary-General Andrea Celeste Saulo expressed concern over the profound impact of climate change on societies, economies, and human lives in Asia. The report underscores the urgent need for action to address these challenges.
Statistics on Water-Related Disasters
In 2023, Asia witnessed 79 water-related disasters, predominantly floods and storms, affecting approximately 9 million residents and claiming the lives of at least 2,000 individuals. These events highlight the pressing need for effective mitigation and adaptation strategies in the region.
Factors Contributing to Intensified Disasters
A warming world amplifies moisture levels in the atmosphere through increased evaporation, leading to more intense rainfall. Additionally, tropical storms gain energy from warming oceans, resulting in heightened risks of extreme weather events. Rising sea levels, attributed to glacier melting and ocean expansion, further exacerbate the vulnerability of coastal communities to flooding.
Case Studies: Impact on India, Pakistan, and Nepal
Recent extreme floods and storms in India, Pakistan, and Nepal resulted in the loss of at least 600 lives between June and August of the previous year. The devastating cyclonic storm Mocha, a record-breaking event in the Bay of Bengal, claimed the lives of 156 individuals, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced disaster preparedness and response measures.
Call for International Support
Climate activist Harjeet Singh emphasized the disproportionate burden faced by developing countries in Asia in dealing with climate-related adversities. Urgent international solidarity and financial assistance from wealthier nations are crucial to bolster the resilience of vulnerable communities and address the inequitable impacts of climate change.

The European ‘Bonsai Army’: Defense Spending Challenges in Europe
National defense maintains its reputation like looking after a pretty ‘bonsai’
Despite 30 years of growth in economic size, defense spending has remained the same.
Welfare costs continue to rise, more than doubling
Farmers protest, public protests over ‘welfare spending vs defense spending’ debate
NATO pledges to spend 2% of GDP on defence, concerns about exposure to financial resource constraints
“The European ‘Bonsai Army’ has only nurtured the bonsai industry.”
Christin Mölling, vice-president of the German think tank Council on Foreign Relations, said this while drawing attention to the European defense situation. The criticism is that they have degenerated into an ‘army of plants’ after decades of nurturing pretty saplings.
The British Economist pointed out that “Europe will face painful adjustments to increase defense spending.” In the 30 years of peace since the fall of the former Soviet Union, Europe has used the cuts in defense spending to increase social welfare budgets.
As the global security landscape has changed rapidly over the past year or so, European countries have been panicking. Despite the threat of Russia moving into Eastern Europe and former US President Donald Trump moving to withdraw support for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the country has promised to increase defense spending, but analysis is that it will not go smoothly According to the Economist, in 1991, gross domestic product (GDP) increased by more than 60%, and in the process, defense spending in real terms fell by 25% in 2015. During the same period, welfare costs increased by 120%.
The IFO Institute estimates that Europe has not invested around 550 billion euros in defense spending since 1991. In fact, as of last year, only 10 out of 25 European NATO member countries kept their promise to spend 2% of GDP on defense. In particular, it was limited to Germany (1.6%), France (1.9%), Italy (1.5%), and Spain (1.3%), which have large economies.
The Economist said, “To reach NATO’s 2% defense spending target, we need to reduce welfare and refocus defense as a top spending priority,” and added, “But European voters oppose pension cuts to buy tanks.” In fact, in Italy, according to a public opinion poll, only 28% agreed to increase defense spending, and 62% expressed their intention to freeze or reduce defense spending.
As an alternative, the government could create a budget plan that expands borrowing, but following the coronavirus pandemic, there are many countries in Europe whose debt has already exceeded 100% of GDP. According to the FT, the average EU national debt-to-GDP is over 80%, and in France, Greece, Italy and Spain, it is over 100%, leading to a lack of borrowing capacity.
In a recent interview with FT, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, who took office in March, urged European leaders to stop just talking and take steps to strengthen their military capabilities. President Stubb said, “Europe had the opportunity to change its mentality from the ‘la la land’ of the post-Cold War era, when the possibility of war was low,” and he emphasized, “Everyone must prepare, not just the front line countries. the league and the European Union.”
