The returning Salah leads Liverpool to a wide victory over Tottenham
The captain of the English team, Ipswich Town, considered his team’s promotion to the Premier League a “major achievement”, stressing that the team spirit was the secret behind this qualification.
The Egyptian star, Sam Morsi, said in exclusive statements to the Al-Hurra channel website, “This great achievement is a wonderful thing. I am proud to be the first Egyptian to achieve this achievement.”
He added: “We have a strong team that plays with a team spirit and a great coach, and everyone was fighting to achieve this goal.”
Ipswich Town returned to the English Premier League for the first time in 22 years, after defeating Huddersfield with two clean goals, on Saturday, in the 46th round, the last of the first division.
The city team located in southeastern England became the second team to emerge from the Championship after Leicester City, which finished at the top of the league (97 points), one point ahead of Ipswich Town in second place.
Ipswich became the fourth club since the founding of the Premier League in 1992 to advance to the first level, coming from the third level, during two consecutive seasons.
Morsi has been leading the Ipswich Town team since the summer of 2021, after he moved to the team from Middlesbrough.
Morsi, who plays in midfield, appeared and previously represented the Egyptian national team in 42 matches with Ipswich Town, scoring 3 goals and contributing to 6 other goals.
Speaking to Al-Hurra website, Morsi (32 years old) described his Iraqi teammate, Ali Al-Hammadi, who plays alongside him on the team, as “young in age, but mature football-wise.” He said he was a “wonderful person.”
Regarding the issue of his return to the Egyptian national team, Morsi said that he did not know about his future with the Egyptian national team, adding: “I was not summoned to the last gathering, but we will see what happens later.”
He added: “My ambition currently is to play in the Premier League and perform at a good level… I am not thinking about playing for Egyptian clubs.”
Morsi was called up for the first time to the Egyptian national team in 2016, when the Argentine coach, Hector Cuper, was supervising the training of the Pharaohs’ national team.
Morsi, who was playing for the English club Wigan at the time, did not appear mainly with the Egyptian national team, although he continued to be called up repeatedly until 2023.
In his speech, Morsi touched on Liverpool star Mohamed Salah, whom he considered a factor that “paved” the way for changing the stereotyped image of Egyptian players.
Morsi said: “Salah paved the way for everyone. People see Egyptian players differently now because of him. Egyptians are seen as professionals, who study hard, and have great talent.”
Despite the criticism he faced after his return from his country’s national team camp in Côte d’Ivoire during the recent African Nations, Morsi defended Salah in this regard.
He said, “Salah left the Egyptian team to receive treatment. Sometimes as a player, when you suffer an injury, you want to get the appropriate treatment and you may not be in the right place. This is difficult for the player.”
Salah was injured in the Egyptian team’s match against Ghana in the group stage of the last African Cup of Nations, which was held last January.
The famous Egyptian star decided to return to his club, Liverpool, to receive treatment there after his chances of participating in the rest of the “Pharaohs” matches diminished, which made him subject to harsh criticism from the fans of the Egyptian national team.
Returning to the achievement of his team, Ipswich Town, Morsi dedicated the achievement to family, friends, and everyone who supported them in their journey towards the Premier League.
He continued, saying: “I also dedicate this achievement to the Palestinian people. I have contacts with many people there, and a few weeks ago they sent me a video clip supporting me, even though they are in a difficult situation.”
Pictures of Morsi after the match that brought his team together with Huddersfield showed him raising the Palestinian flag on the field during celebrations of his promotion to the most prestigious football league in England.
“These men are true heroes,” Morsi said.
