EDITORIAL: For a much-needed success
What was stated by the agricultural authorities, regarding the fact that two specimens, a male and a female, of the fruit fly were found in the Chimbarongo commune, is undoubtedly a warning bell.
Our region of O’Higgins, eminently an exporter of fruit, an industry that not only generates employment, but also leaves enormous economic benefits for the area, is very attentive to the work that comes from now on.
As the SAG explained last Friday, after a technical meeting held in the regional capital together with officials from the Libertador and also from the Maule region, today Chile is free of this pest, and having detected these two flies in the urban area of the city of wicker, makes efforts to eradicate all traces of these specimens essential.
The 100 officials who contribute to this task, expressed in the words of the national director of the SAG, José Guajardo, are key to keeping our region free of the fruit fly and maintaining the certification of the products that leave our country.
Both O’Higgins and the residents of Maule know well that the discovery is an alarm for production, but the effective work that the SAG has carried out for years is a guarantee to feel calm.
This campaign, with nearly 500 million pesos of investment – as stated by the Minister of Agriculture, Cristian Silva – shows that all the actors involved will seek success. The region needs it.

Jenniffer González will clean the house when she arrives in La Fortaleza | Decision 2024
In a recent interview with THE SPOKESMAN, Jenniffer González Colón, the resident commissioner and candidate for governor for the New Progressive Party (PNP), made a bold statement regarding the agency heads of the current Pierluisi administration. She declared that if she were to become governor, none of the current agency heads would retain their positions.
González Colón criticized the agency heads for engaging in political gamesmanship instead of focusing on their official duties. She specifically called out Manuel Laboy Rivera, the executive director of the Central Office of Recovery, Reconstruction and Resilience (COR3), for engaging in political activities rather than overseeing the reconstruction efforts in Puerto Rico.
The commissioner highlighted the inefficiency of the current administration in managing federal funds, leading to the loss of billions of dollars in education, health, and housing sectors. She emphasized the need for better oversight and management of federal funds to avoid losing out on crucial resources for the island.
González Colón also criticized Governor Pierluisi for delegating the negotiation process related to the Debt Adjustment Plan (PAD) of the Electric Energy Authority (PREPA) to the Fiscal Control Board (JCF). She raised concerns about the impact of the proposed charge on electricity subscribers and the lack of initiatives to mitigate its effects on the people of Puerto Rico.
During her appearance on DECISION 2024, González Colón presented several proposals, including separating the Puerto Rico Police Bureau from the Department of Public Security, reforming the Health Insurance Administration (ASES), and creating more opportunities for medical residences in hospitals.
The commissioner also called on Governor Pierluisi to hold a local plebiscite using the definitions approved by the United States Congress to allow the people of Puerto Rico to determine their political status.
Overall, González Colón’s statements and proposals shed light on the challenges facing Puerto Rico and the need for effective leadership to address them. If elected governor, she promises to prioritize the well-being of the people and ensure efficient management of resources for the island’s development.
