Harimoto faced Germany star Ovcharov, the men’s singles bronze medalist at the Tokyo Olympics, in the first match. In the past games, Harimoto has recorded 5 wins and 4 losses and is currently on a 3-game winning streak.
In their last game in October 2022, they won 4-0 in straight sets.
In the first game, Harimoto took the lead with a steady serve with both hands and a skillful flick on the third ball.
But with the score at 8:5, Ovcharov suddenly made a powerful blow, giving up 6 points in a row and losing the game.
In the second game, Harimoto used a strategy to rouse his opponent with a back-straight ball. He also hits more balls into the middle and dominates rallies with his signature high-speed backhand.
As the score went from 9-6 to 9-8, Harimoto’s bench went into a timeout. In the end, Harimoto won the game by carefully hitting the middle and causing Ovcharov to make an error.
In the third game, Ovcharov suffered a strong attack and struggled in the middle half, keeping his distance from the table and losing 5:11, but in the fourth game, Harimoto did not become defensive and continued to attack aggressively in the front half. They took the game back 11-4.
In the fifth and final game, Harimoto took a 7-2 lead and showed his aggressiveness by attacking difficult balls on the table with advances.
Ovcharov started attacking again in the middle and was caught at 7-6, but he kept the lead by making sure to score Chiquita on the reception and ended up winning the rally by winning the entire game.
