Three armed Belarusian border guards entered Lithuania’s territory to a depth of two and a half meters on Monday, the State Border Guard Service of Lithuania (VSAT) said on Tuesday.
According to VSAT, Belarusian border guards turned back when they approached the physical barrier on the Lithuanian side.
Lithuanian border guards were monitoring and monitoring the events and were ready to respond, VSAT added.
The incident occurred in the territory of the Ignalina district.
The VSAT statement said that the Belarusian border guards approached a collapsed patrol bridge, turned around and crossed the border line.
After entering the Lithuanian side, Belarusian border guards began to walk between the installed physical barrier preventing further entry into Lithuania’s interior and the border line. After that, they invaded the territory of Belarus again.
Additional forces from the Lithuanian border guard were immediately called to the scene, but their intervention was not necessary.
VSAT emphasizes that the situation is under control and the Belarusian border guards have no opportunity to penetrate further into Lithuania as there is a physical barrier on the Lithuanian side and the Lithuanian border guards are ready to respond.
The head of VSAT, General Rustam Lubayev, told the BNS agency that it was a deliberate provocation by Belarusian border guards.
“It was definitely a deliberate act, because the Belarusian border guards know very well where the border line is. In addition, the physical barrier and boundary markings are clearly visible. This incident can be viewed as a deliberate act to test our vigilance,” Lubayev said.
In April last year, Lithuanian border guards registered two similar incidents in the Šalcininki and Švenčoni districts.
