Few people want to think about whether the airline itself is safe when planning a trip. We more or less take it for granted. But there are differences.
To reassure anxious air travelers, the aviation site Airline Ratings publishes an annual ranking of the safest airlines in the world.
The site’s aviation experts compare the safety credentials of nearly 400 airlines and examine 11 criteria, including major safety incidents, recent fatalities, audits by aviation regulators, fleet age and expert pilot training, to determine the safest airlines.
– Assessments do not include events beyond the airline’s control, such as bird strikes, weather disturbances, turbulence damage or lightning strikes, writes travel magazine Condé Nast Traveler.

Loud and safe Down Under
In 2024, the title of safest airline in the world will go to Air New Zealand. According to Geoffrey Thomas, editor-in-chief of Airline Ratings, the company secured the top spot thanks to its “unwavering focus on safety.”
“The airline has excelled in all areas of safety and has never lost sight of the smallest detail,” Thomas said in a statement.
The airline’s experienced pilots also helped Air New Zealand secure the top spot.
– The airline operates in some of the most demanding weather conditions that test pilots’ skills. Wellington, for example, is one of the windiest airports in the world, while Queenstown presents a major navigation challenge, says Thomas.

According to the report, Air New Zealand took the top spot, ahead of Australian airline Qantas by just 1.5 points. Qantas ranked first in 2023 and several other years. In third place in the international “ranking” is Virgin Australia.

The 25 safest airlines
But you don’t have to worry if you fly with a company lower on the list.
SAS ranks 11th out of the 25 safest.
– The safety margins between these 25 largest airlines are very small, says Thomas.
In fact, the competition was so fierce that the team decided to expand the list from 20 to 25 airlines for the first time.

The 20 safest low-cost companies in the world
The report also includes a separate list of the safest low-cost airlines worldwide. Here Norwegian takes 5th place.
“These airlines all have excellent safety cultures and few incidents,” says Thomas.
Five low-cost airlines from the United States were included in the list of the 20 safest low-cost airlines: Frontier (6th), Southwest (9), Sun Country (14), Spirit (15) and JetBlue (17). However, the leading position went to the Australian Jetstar group.
