They are immortal! Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen equals a historic record
Don’t let the unique red become faded pink, Left Party – Altinget

Starting today, May 8, the Left Party gathers for congress. The big issue during the congress days is the proposal for a new party program. Almost a thousand motions have been received in response to the proposal, which shows a great commitment among the party members. The criticism has sometimes been very harsh. A part critic has even said that the party leadership is creating a new party with the proposal.
Had to iron the foot
Overall, it can be said that classic socialist expressions and Marxist formulations have been brushed aside in the proposal. The intention of the V leadership seems to be simply to grind down the thresholds so much that center-left voters who fear words like class struggle and capitalism will have an easier time buying the left-wing issues. Presumably, Nooshi Dadgostar also hopes that it will make it easier for V to be accepted as capable of governing by the Social Democrats, the Center Party and the Green Party.
There is also no mistaking Dadgostar’s longing for ministerial stools in a future Andersson government after the election in 2026. Ministerial posts at any price and a party program that does not upset the better-off urban middle class – can that really be the right price?
Parties may need to renew and change their appeal to be relevant in the present. But there are examples where strategists and party leaders pushed the change work so much that parties were almost unrecognizable, to the chagrin of the grassroots and core voters. Many political insiders probably still remember leading moderates who, during Reinfeldt’s neo-moderate era, called defense a special interest, cut the defense budget and thus ignored the reborn Russian threat. A classic moderate profile question was rationalized away in the name of never-ending renewal. Today, there is hardly a single moderate who does not pull out the pillow of shame when this comes up.
Harmless pink
When the Left Party now possibly sheds skin, it will not be according to a new-fashioned model, but rather to become a more smooth party than it is today and has the potential to be. The angry red turns into the harmless pink.
There is also no mistaking Dadgostar’s longing for ministerial stools in a future Andersson government after the election in 2026. Ministerial posts at any price and a party program that does not upset the better-off urban middle class – can that really be the right price?
Phalanx battles are not unique to the Left Party, they exist in all parties. But in some way, V is historically the party of the phalanx battles, including the party bombings during the 20th century. And in the early 00s, the battles were between traditionalists and innovators. Even if the party commission, which leads the work on the new party program, backed off somewhat and delivered new writings about the more debated concepts of socialism and capitalism, the debate will flare up in the coming days.
Risks losing the purpose of its existence
The Left Party is a party of ideas and a party of activists. Not infrequently it is noticeable in the May Day demonstrations. In Malmö last Wednesday, for example, the Left Party’s train with 6,000 participants was almost six times larger than the Social Democrats’. People’s movements must allow a great variety of opinions but at the same time offer concepts, descriptions and stories that the majority of members recognize and sympathize with. If you remove the common, you risk losing the purpose of your existence. Should the new party program become too faded and flattened, there is of course a risk in the long term of members leaving and starting a new one.
Before the last parliamentary election, Nooshi Dadgostar was questioned on television and could not really explain central socialist concepts, such as the vision of the classless society. It was remarkable and can be said to indicate an arrogance towards the ideological foundations of the party she is set to lead. Concepts of a similar nature must now be cleared out.
Difficulties in explaining the importance and relevance of ideas to voters must not lead a party away from its ideology. Party leaders such as Gudrun Schyman and Jonas Sjöstedt have managed to be political educators. Can’t handle Dadgostar, it’s probably she who should be replaced rather than the ideas about socialism, the class struggle and the resistance to capitalism.

Police fired weapons at university
A police officer involved in clearing protesters from a Columbia University administration building this week fired his weapon inside the building, a spokesman for District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office confirmed Thursday.
No one was injured, according to spokesman Doug Cohen, who added that there were other officers but no students in the vicinity. He noted that Bragg’s office is reviewing the facts.
He did not provide further details about the incident, which was first reported by the news outlet The City.
The New York Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Associated Press.
The incident occurred when police officers stormed Hamilton Hall on Tuesday night, where pro-Palestinian protesters had been barricaded for more than 20 hours. In a video it was possible to see agents with belts and riot shields entering through a second floor window. Police had said the protesters had not put up any resistance.
More than 100 protesters were arrested during the raid. They are among more than 2,000 people who have been arrested during pro-Palestinian demonstrations at various U.S. universities in recent weeks, according to an AP tally updated Thursday.
Protesters from Columbia had taken over Hamilton Hall earlier on Tuesday, after having started their protests with a camping trip on April 17. That camp was one of the first to be placed on college campuses.
Although more than 100 arrests were made the next day and tents were removed, protesters ignored threats that they would be suspended and set up camp again. They then escalated their protest by occupying Hamilton Hall, an administration building that was also taken over in 1968 by students protesting racism and the war in Vietnam.
There have been protests and arrests in almost every corner of the country. In the last 24 hours, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) campus has been the focus of attention: early Thursday there were chaotic scenes when riot police attacked a crowd of protesters.
Hundreds of protesters at UCLA refused orders to leave, and some formed human chains as police fired stun grenades to disperse them.
At least 200 people were arrested, said Sergeant Alejandro Rubio of the California Highway Patrol, citing data from the Los Angeles County Police Department.
Another 300 people voluntarily left during the hours-long standoff, some of them placing their hands above their heads at the campsite in a sign of peaceful surrender, according to the university. Others ran as police with batons charged into the crowd of more than 1,000 people.
Later Thursday morning, workers removed barricades and dismantled the protesters’ camp. Bulldozers lifted up trash bags and tents. The Royce Hall building was covered in graffiti.
Protesters at universities across the United States are urging their schools to stop doing business with Israel or companies they say support the war in Gaza, in a student movement like no other this century.
Demonstrations began at Columbia University on April 17. The students are calling for an end to the war between Israel and Hamas, in which more than 34,000 Palestinians have died in the Gaza Strip, according to the Palestinian territory’s Ministry of Health. Israel launched its Gaza offensive after Hamas fighters killed about 1,200 people and took about 250 hostages in southern Israel on October 7, 2023.
