Russia recently used short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) procured from North Korea to carry out multiple attacks against Ukraine, the White House said on Thursday (January 4), citing declassified intelligence information.
John Kirby, coordinator of the White House National Security Council, has announced that the United States will discuss this discovery with the United Nations (UN) Security Council, Reuters reports.
Kirby called North Korea’s arms transfer to Russia a “significant and troubling escalation” and said the United States would impose additional sanctions on those who facilitate these arms deals.
Both Moscow and Pyongyang have denied any arms deals, but last September North Korean leader Kim Jong-un visited Russia, where he agreed to deepen military ties with dictator Vladimir Putin.
The use of North Korean missiles in Ukraine has also been condemned by Britain and South Korea, which reported in November that Pyongyang may have supplied SRBMs to Russia as part of a larger arms deal. This also includes anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles, artillery and mortar shells and assault rifles.
