On January 10th, many a lover of independent theater was initially surprised. The Prasker theater group Masopust, which has been involved in the so-called Eliad Library for the past ten years, is ceasing its activities this summer.
After 16 years, several awards from theater critics and a premiere with leading Czech actors and directors. For many years, Masopust gave us space for a purposeful form of theater that has two meanings, disobedience to established certainties, dramaturgical, staged and acting discoveries that delight us and perhaps the girls too. “We are so aware of this possibility that we do not want to use it to its full extent and under limited conditions as an attachment,” the creators explained in the official announcement.
“There are several reasons, and I think in hindsight you will know who was the most important,” said founder and dramaturge Tereza Marekov, who has been in the group along with actor Miloslav Knig since his arrest in 2008. We started with the ir group as allies of DAMU graduates. This gradually developed from the vision of a common theater to a chamber production and dramaturgy, but the specific poetics certainly did not appeal to us, summarizes Masopust’s development.
At the moment we are tired of the multifunctional Jakhosi theater, which affects both us and what is created. “For example, I have long regretted that we will organize premieres but cannot give them a chance because the production was created for financial, production-related or other reasons,” the theater owner continued.
Pieces from the current repertoire will be gradually updated throughout the year. In them, the audience was able to see, in addition to the actor Miloslav Knig (who, in addition to his work as an actor, also worked as a writer and director), two other Czech theater scenes: Jan Hjek plays in Ppravch na vechno, Tom Petk and Petr Uhlk in Enet. Vojtch Vondrek, Petra Palkov, Barbora Bokov and you Tajana Medveck, Magdalna Borov, Michal Kern, Pavla Beretov appeared in the old pieces…
Masopust is a stupidly independent scene that, unlike many similar platforms, could have emerged on the solid ground of Prague’s Na zbradl theater. On the first floor of the building on Anen Square, where the famous dream took place, is Eliad’s library. A chamber room for a chamber edge where the wild actor was touched and brought to the rescue.
Marek’s whistle said that there were various suggestions for the future. We can also wait a little until New Year’s Eve, because we want to act and in December 2024 something or someone will appear to you, he suggests. I thought that Masopust would become a platform for a kind of theatrical-imaginative-therapeutic encounter. Eliadovka is perfect for that, he said. However, offering another theater with a similar structure is not on the agenda: the cultural organisms have to somehow get to the point where it makes sense at all.
Fight in the herd
And what traces did the carnival leave behind of the reindeer? What are you talking about? Beyond the written scholarship, I often have the feeling that we are seduced into a kind of self-expression and self-promotion in which there is a latent, hidden competition between a bevy of small and independent theaters vying for small morsels of competent dramaturgs. FX Alda wrote that the artist should not interpret himself, not even his perspective, he added.
The most appreciated piece from the production of the scene is the famous Denk zlodje directed by Jan Nebeskho. At the beginning of 2018, he immediately took home the theater critics’ prize: for staging, male acting and music. “Denk vlodje” wouldn’t be today if we hadn’t worked on many previous productions and learned from them, emphasizes Marekov. But we started with complex pieces, not an oratorio for an actor. The end of Josef Topol’s Mardi Gras and then Ibsenv Brand, those were the big dramas that lured us. And if we gradually became a chamber company, it was also a difficult circumstance and a development that deals with reality and analyzes the business development of its companies.
However, my colleagues and I gradually felt the temptation to delve into intimate, inner lands and we created a series of productions with Jan Nebesk, Denk zlodje and Fredy, in which there were many work and love stories. We discovered young colleagues who talked about cooperation and traced something similar in enet or the Declaration of Verticality. It is possible that we will disappear due to the natural state of increasing concentration… But first we will go to the HRT and meet all year round, reveals Marekov.
Among other things, he invites you to the krtn Boha project, on which he works with Jim Admek and Kateina Souková. The premiere will take place in autumn. We want to get to know girls more intensively this year. In addition to dramaturgical events, there will also be participation in the current productions of Enet, Tisc radost, Fredy, Declaration of Verticality and Sweat. In the closing ceremony of Traumerei directed by Jan Nebeskho with the working name Vitr 24.
