I won’t be able to repeat this exact story that was told to me in Ukraine, but I will try. Ukrainian soldiers captured a Russian soldier there. This is how Jānis Slaidiņš, NBS major and staff officer of the National Guard, begins his story about the situation in the Russian army, among the soldiers, in the TV24 program “Current about military operations in Ukraine”.
It was a person from central Russia – not even one who lived behind the Ural Mountains. A man from a village with 28 inhabitants. There was only one TV for the local milkmaid. This woman then tells the rest of the villagers every day the news she has seen about what is happening in the world.
Slaidins continues: “When asked what he is doing in Ukraine, the answer is clear: he came to fight against Nazism and also against NATO.” The most interesting thing about all this “politics” was that the person can’t read at all!”
The officer summarizes that there is no reason to be surprised about the composition of the Russian troops, where many come from such villages where there is the only source of news the village milkmaid.
“What can be said briefly about the dissemination of information in Russia? Nothing. These people are simply promised money and go to war against evil!” Slaidins ends his story.
