I have a personal story – I have the honor of working on the International Council of SOS Children’s Villages, which covers all 130 countries. The Italian colleagues actually forced them to go to southern Italy, way down where the refugee boats arrive and where the refugee camps are. This is how Kārlis Danēvičs, board member and risk director of SEB banka, begins his comment on illegal immigration in the TV24 program “Press Club”.
“I was there two months ago. It changed the outlook on life. – when you see children’s shoes washed up on the beach after the refugee boats sank, when you see what it looks like and what the Italians are dealing with, when you see the hopelessness…” is how Danevičs describes what he saw on site.
He also tells a story from his personal experience where illegal immigrants, when walking down the street with the police, still dare to approach them and offer to buy drugs. In Europe there is a great empathy for our problems, which we can’t get because we don’t have empathy and understanding for their problems.”
He emphasizes that he is not a supporter of uncontrolled migration, but that this is a real problem. “They won’t disappear. Since people are of the opinion that there is no need to show solidarity with this, it can directly contribute to the disintegration of Europe. We have no compassion for them, they will have no compassion for us in our difficult hour.”
