On average, residents of Drenthe have to travel long distances to reach the nearest family doctor. The average travel distance in the Netherlands is 1.1 kilometers, but in almost all Drenthe municipalities the distance is significantly longer.
The Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) calculated this using figures for 2022. In Drenthe, only the municipality of Meppel has an average driving distance of 1.1 kilometers to the nearest general practitioner. In addition, the municipality of Assen comes closest at 1.2 kilometers.
In the other Drenthe municipalities, people on average have to travel much further to get to the nearest family doctor. In Coevorden, Borger-Odoorn and De Wolden the distance is 2.0 kilometers, in Westerveld and Aa and Hunze it is 2.2 and 2.4 kilometers respectively.
On average, residents of Midden-Drenthe have to travel the longest distance to reach the nearest general practitioner. According to CBS, the average in this community is 2.6 kilometers.
People in the west and center of the country generally have to travel the fewest kilometers to see a doctor. The residents of Texel have to travel the longest distance on average, 2.8 kilometers. On Schiermonnikoog, where there is only one village and therefore all amenities are nearby, the distance is the shortest: 0.4 kilometers.
In 2008, the average travel distance in the Netherlands was 800 meters. According to a CBS spokesman, many general practices have disappeared or merged in recent years. The new locations are often a little further away.
