On December 21, at the Asylum Seekers Accommodation Center “Liepna” (hereinafter: PMIC), the completion of the emergency financing instrument project of the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund “Resolving the urgent need for accommodation and humanitarian assistance due to the increased number of asylum seekers in Latvia” took place ( hereinafter referred to as “the Project”), the visit was attended by officials from the Directorate of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (hereinafter “the Directorate”) and cooperation partners – representatives of the Ministry of the Interior and the State Security Agency.
Taking into account the complex and changing geopolitical conditions of the world, management, with the financing of the project, implemented a number of measures to create and improve the PMIC, which can accommodate 250 people. The project made major technical improvements and ensured the recruitment of PMIC staff – 15 staff – as well as the opportunity for asylum seekers to receive advice from a GP and Community Integration Fund mentors on PMIC premises.
During the visit, officials gained an insight into the improvements and adaptations made in the PMIC premises and inspected the premises and inventory that make it possible to provide a functional and user-friendly environment for the asylum seekers housed in the building on a daily basis.
As of August 21st of this year, a total of 419 asylum seekers from the following countries were already accommodated in the PMIC: Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Iran, Cameroon, Togo, Congo, Syria, India, Ethiopia, Seychelles, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Mali, Gambia, Eritrea , Bangladesh, Pakistan, Somalia, Yemen, Egypt, Tajikistan, Chad, Sudan, Guinea.
Thanks to the project’s funding, these people had the opportunity to stay in well-equipped rooms and receive the practical support they needed during the asylum process.
Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund Emergency Financing Instrument Project No. HOME/2021/AMIF/AG/EMAS/TF1LV/0003 The project “Addressing the urgent need for shelter and humanitarian assistance due to the increased number of asylum seekers in Latvia” ran from March 1, 2022. By December 31st of this year, funding totaling 2,024,784.81 euros had been used.
