Prabowo Subianto’s Presidency in Indonesia
SEOUL, South Korea — Prabowo Subianto’s journey to the Indonesian presidency seems assured. Following his victory in February’s election, he has successfully defended his position against legal challenges, with the highest court dismissing appeals for a re-vote and accusations of fraud. President Biden and other international leaders have extended their congratulations on his win.
Amid a year of significant global elections, lingering uncertainties surround the aftermath of Indonesia’s vote, the world’s third-largest democracy. Will Prabowo usher in a new era, or will his leadership veer Indonesia back towards its authoritarian past? What will the dynamics be between Prabowo and the United States, the nation that initially supported him, then later imposed sanctions over alleged human rights violations?
On April 22, Indonesia’s Constitutional Court rejected a petition from the two defeated candidates in the election, who claimed widespread vote-buying and government meddling. Nevertheless, many observers view Prabowo’s rise to power with skepticism.
“This national election was undoubtedly the least free and fair in the post-Suharto era,” asserts Edward Aspinall, an Indonesian politics expert at the Australian National University.
The ousting of former President Suharto in 1998, after a lengthy authoritarian reign, marked a period of democratic reforms in Indonesia, where elections were generally deemed fair. However, outgoing President Joko Widodo loosened constraints on presidential authority. Critics argue that Widodo stifled the nation’s anti-corruption watchdog in 2019 by stripping its autonomy and transforming it into a government entity. Additionally, he positioned his 37-year-old son as Prabowo’s vice president. Experts suggest Prabowo may not need to reverse democratic reforms further.
Bivitri Susanti, a lecturer at the Indonesia Jentera School of Law, highlights the Biden administration’s emphasis on global democracy and urges the U.S. to denounce “dynastic politics.”
Analysis of Political Statements
Expressing concern, a prominent figure stated, “This signifies a significant move towards authoritarianism, warranting public scrutiny.”
Speculation surrounds the potential trajectory of President Prabowo’s leadership, with some conceding the possibility of a transformed persona from his military past, marred by allegations of severe misconduct towards civilians.
During his electoral campaign, Prabowo emphasized the empowerment of the Indonesian populace, asserting that the nation’s destiny hinges on the principle of “one person, one vote.”

Indonesia’s President-elect Prabowo Subianto and His Controversial Past
Prabowo Subianto, Indonesia’s President-elect, has faced challenges regarding his election victory, which were rejected in Jakarta. Despite this, observers are keen on analyzing his stance on various issues.
Early Influences and Training
Prabowo’s educational background includes graduating from high school at the American School in London. He also underwent special forces training at Fort Bragg, N.C., and officer training at Fort Benning, Ga., in the 1980s.
Controversial Past
Prabowo’s tenure as head of Kopassus, Indonesia’s special forces command, was marred by allegations of human rights abuses, including involvement in civilian killings during the occupation of East Timor and the disappearance of student activists.
Immunity Deal and Allegations
Despite the allegations against him, Prabowo was never prosecuted due to an agreement that granted immunity to outgoing generals in exchange for political disengagement. However, evidence suggests that criminal activities were prevalent within Kopassus.
Leahy Law and U.S. Relations
The Leahy Law, which prohibits U.S. support to foreign military forces involved in gross human rights violations, led to the U.S. cutting ties with Kopassus and banning Prabowo from entering the country until he assumed the role of defense minister in 2020.
Geopolitical Dilemma
Prabowo’s controversial past poses a dilemma for the U.S., balancing geopolitical interests with human rights values. The conflicting priorities between government branches, such as the Pentagon and the State Department, further complicate the situation.
Conclusion
Prabowo’s history raises questions about the alignment of values and partnerships in international relations. The delicate balance between strategic alliances and moral principles remains a challenge for countries like the U.S. when engaging with controversial figures.
The Pentagon’s Training Program in Indonesia
Despite a ban imposed by Congress, the Pentagon continued its training program in Indonesia through a separately funded initiative, which former Rep. Nancy Pelosi criticized as a blatant “circumvention of Congress.”
Shifting Historical Priorities
During the Cold War, the U.S. supported Suharto in his fight against communism. However, after the Cold War ended, the Clinton administration sought to promote democracy and urged Suharto to step down. This call for change came in response to riots in Indonesia in 1998, triggered by discontent with authoritarianism, corruption, and economic difficulties.
Many Indonesians, particularly the younger generation, are unaware of this historical context.
According to Rieser, the U.S. government should reflect on its actions during the Cold War era. He emphasizes the importance of standing up for democratic values, even when leaders like Prabowo come to power. Publicly supporting Indonesians who are advocating for democracy is crucial.
Currently, world leaders, including President Biden, have only extended their congratulations to the newly elected president.
Additional Insight: It is essential for the U.S. to uphold its democratic principles and support movements for democracy, especially in countries like Indonesia.

The Boy Scouts change their name to become more “inclusive” (and forget about abuse complaints): they become Scouting America
Revolution in Boy Scouts of America. The organization founded in Texas 114 years ago decided to change its name to be more inclusive and welcoming towards girls. From February 8 next year, the day of its 115th opponent, the association of small explorers will become ‘Scouting America‘, “a natural evolution to ensure that all young Americans feel recognized,” said Roger A. Krone, president and CEO. In fact, it is also one strategic move after that in recent times the organization, which has always been a stronghold of the conservatism of the southern United States, has been overwhelmed by over tens of thousands of complaints abuse sexual which led her, in 2020, to declare bankruptcy and accept a plan restructuring for 2.4 billion. And last year, the Scouts began compensating thousands of victims through the Victims Compensation Trust which is expected to pay $2.4 billion to more than 82,000 children who have suffered abuse.
Since then the organization has imposed a series of protocols to avoid further violence. Among these, one training mandatory youth protection for volunteers and employees, a process of screening which includes controls of criminal records for leaders and adult staff and a policy that requires at least two adults who have undergone training to be present with youth at all times during activities. But the scandals still gave a big jolt to his fame.
Furthermore, like other organizations, the Scouts lost many members during the pandemic, a real drop compared to the peak reached in 2018 with over 2 million members. Currently the number has settled at just over a million of which 176,000 girls. Furthermore, young explorers were not allowed to access the highest ranks of the association until 2017, a form of discrimination which also affected gay members who were not admitted until 2013. When the doors opened for the first time for girls, the official explanation was that it was a way to help families manage their children, now the leaders of the The association maintains that the change must also be represented in the name. “The time has come for the organization to have a name that better reflects the young people currently enrolled – explained Krone – especially since almost 20% of the members are girls or young women”.
The rebranding, the president underlined, will not change the mission of preparing “young people to do ethical and moral choices based on scout principles. America’s values are scouting values.” However, in one of the most conservative states in America there are those who are already turning up their noses, calling it an “unnecessary” change, while the Girl Scouts – an organization separate from the Boy Scouts of America – have contested that this opening in the name of equality genre he could create confusion and harm their recruiting efforts. They then filed a complaint in federal court in Manhattan. But ultimately, a judge ruled that both associations can use words like “scout” and “scouting.”
