Vembanyama set several records in his first season with the Spurs, averaging 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 3.6 blocks and 1.2 steals.
The Frenchman is the third Spurs player to win the NBA Rookie of the Year award. Before him, it was won by David Robinson in 1990, and in 1998 by Tim Duncan. Like Vembanyama, they were selected with the number one pick in the draft.
“My job has always been to help the team and get better with every match,” said the 20-year-old center back after receiving the award. “In order to do that, I knew I had to have a good season individually.”
Vembanyama is the sixth player in NBA history to receive all the first places in the Rookie of the Year voting. Since the 1952 season, when such an award was introduced, Ralph Sampson from the Houston Rockets (1984), Robinson from the Spurs (1990), Blake Griffin from the Los Angeles Clippers (2011), Damien Lillard of the Portland Trail Blazers (2013) and Karl-Anthony Towns of the Minnesota Timberwolves (2016).
Charlotte Hornets forward Brandon Miller and Oklahoma City Thunder center Chet Holmgren also claimed the title of best rookie this season.
Holmgren averaged 16.5 points and 7.9 rebounds, while Miller averaged 17.4 points and 184 3-pointers this season.
In the vote for the best rookie, Vembanyama was followed by Holmgren, who received 98 out of 99 second places, while Miller rounded out the top three.
Vembanyama is the first European since Luka Doncic in 2019 to win the NBA’s best rookie award.
The Frenchman is also the first rookie in the league to score at least 1,500 points, provide at least 250 assists and block at least 250 shots in his first season.
Vembanyama was also nominated as one of the top three defensive players in the league this season. The three-time owner of this award, Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert and Miami Heat center Bamu Adebayo are also competing for this award. The winner in this nomination will be announced on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets, Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks and Shay Gilges-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder are competing for the NBA MVP award. This award will be presented on Wednesday.
NBA season awards are given for performance in the main tournament.

FIFA sanctions Emelec with the prohibition of signing players in 2 transfer markets
– 2024-05-07 18:02:35
Club Sport Emelec faces a sanction from the International Federation of Associated Football (FIFA) that disqualifies it from signing players during the next two transfer periods. This measure is due to non-compliance with a ruling issued by FIFA, along with the payment of a fine of 10 thousand Swiss francs.
The team had recently managed to lift a previous suspension imposed by the Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) due to debts owed to Joao Rojas and LDU. However, shortly after the lawsuit filed by Colombian player Alexis Zapata against the club was made public, which triggered the new sanction by FIFA.
This situation poses a challenge for the team and its director José Pileggi, who will have to face the restriction in the transfer market and look for solutions to meet the club’s financial obligations.

Ukraine says it has uncovered a network that planned to kill Zelenskyi
Two officers in Ukraine’s own state guard service have been arrested, suspected of carrying out the plan under Moscow’s leadership, reports the security service SBU.
They are said to have been recruited before Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, according to a statement on Tuesday. The plan is said to have been to abduct Zelenskyj and then kill him.
– Our counterintelligence service and investigators from the SBU have averted plans to eliminate Ukraine’s president and members of the top leadership within politics and defense, writes the SBU on Telegram.
The SBU quotes Ukraine’s intelligence chief Vasyl Maljuk as saying that an attack was to be carried out before Russian President Vladimir Putin was sworn in for a fifth presidential term on Tuesday. The covert operation that exposed the network was led by Maljuk himself.
It is not new that Ukraine accuses Russia of assassination plans against Zelenskyi. In 2002, he stated that he had been the victim of at least ten attempted murders.
In April, Polish prosecutors also announced that a Polish man had been arrested on suspicion of spying on behalf of Russia in connection with an assassination plot against Zelenskyj.
