Even though the competition welcomes young participants, it creates similar feelings to the Olympic Games for adults because athletes from many countries take part and everyone has the goal of achieving the greatest success in their sporting career, said Olivers Mūrnieks, captain of the Latvian 3×3 -Ice hockey team. The accommodation of athletes from different sports under one roof and the serious attitude of all athletes towards competition also contributed to a special atmosphere.
Having just turned his attention to 3×3 hockey, Mūrnieks expected something different. At first he thought that he would have to play three-on-three on the large ice rink of classic ice hockey. Everything turned out completely differently, because 3×3 hockey has to be played differently on the small pitch. Before the Olympic tournament, the players also had no idea what to expect from their opponents.
Both Mūrnieks and his national team teammate Kristers Obuk believe that some rules in 3×3 hockey should be changed to make the game more interesting.
There would be more intrigue on the field if players could switch at any time instead of waiting for a signal, said Obuk, who also missed a power play on the field.
After returning home, the 3×3 hockey players are already waiting in the clubs – Mūrnieks is a striker for “Mogo/LSPA”, while Obuks plays in attack for the HS team “Rīga”.
3×3 hockey made its debut at the 2020 Youth Olympic Games in Switzerland, where hockey players from different countries were brought together into teams. This makes the Latvian national team the first to win gold medals in 3×3 hockey under the flag of their country.
