The Csepel D-705 was essentially developed as a replacement for the D-700. The latter still had common main units in many respects with the Ikarus 60. The brand new tractor unit became one of the most popular types of the Csepel Autogyár and was produced for quite a long time, between 1958 and 1975.
Even in the years following its introduction, it was the star of exhibitions and advertising. In 1960, for example, it was exhibited at the Budapest International Fair (BNV) as a two-tank semi-replacement vehicle. In the same year a series of photos was taken by him for the Hungarian National Automobile Society (MOGÜRT). However, in these pictures it was already seen with a tank trailer that was intended to transport wine. The model then appeared on the roads with several types of tractors, including a semi-trailer with a tarpaulin.
The large selection was no coincidence, as Csepel Autógyár produced a series of chassisless self-supporting tractor units for this tractor unit. The D-705 was usually always equipped with additional equipment depending on the tractor type.
In the variant of cement transport shown in the opening image of this article, the capacity of the containers for holding the cement was seven cubic meters each. Filling could be done via the filler cap, using large doses, with compressed air or via the dust separator built into the tanks. With two tanks, the average emptying time was 25-30 minutes, so the driver not only had time for a coffee, but also for a good conversation.
It is interesting that special solutions were sometimes necessary. On the road tractor, an additional weight of 3,000 kilograms was attached to the platform, ensuring that the wheels adhere well to the ground. However, the maximum payload of these trucks did not exceed 10 tons.
Although it was generally equipped with a 170 liter fuel tank, the duty-paid semi-trailers also contained an additional fuel tank, meaning that the D-705 achieved a range of around 1,500 kilometers when fully charged. This was of utmost importance in international transport, as Hungarocamion transported to Turkey and the Middle East, among other places, and the long range was therefore crucial in regions with a rare well network.
The Csepel Car Factory Production Museum still preserves a beautifully restored version with a “swing car”. In the 2000s, this example was even exhibited at the Budapest Motor Show. The tractor unit, which is still timelessly beautiful today, was primarily equipped with the water-cooled in-line six-cylinder diesel engine D-614, which had a displacement of over 7,990 cubic centimeters and an output of 145 hp.
At the same time, the model could also be ordered with a turbocharged 8275 cc engine. This resulted in a slightly higher output of 170 hp. A five-speed synchronous transmission (AST65/1-4 or AST 65/1-3) is connected to the power source with final drive or mechanical remote control.
The driver’s seat was adjustable and by folding up the seat back you could create a sleeping place for two people in the rear of the cabin. For sufficient comfort, the D-705 was equipped not only with semi-elliptical leaf springs, but also with auxiliary springs and telescopic shock absorbers. Csepel Autógyár also mentioned the driving characteristics of the tractor unit on the nameplate at the time.
The model had a grip of 13.5 and 16 percent and its “theoretical top speed” was between 61 and 79 km/h. Since unexpected situations were already being considered back then, the D-705 was equipped with 3 spare wheels, two of which were mounted on the tractor and one on the trailer.
Drivers really liked this semi-trailer at the time, and it is no wonder that over the course of more than ten years of production, this semi-trailer became Csepel Autogyár’s most popular tractor unit.
