The account dedicated to French memes is accused of being politicized and has decided to end its adventure.
Five years and then gone. This Wednesday, January 24th, the well-known account “Decentralized Memes” is launching after five years of activity. If he had started collecting French memes while creating his own, his critics in recent months have accused him of becoming politicized.
His recent publication attacking the news channel Cnews’ coverage of the farmers’ crisis sparked a reaction far beyond its usual audience. There were many comments from people close to the far right.
The principle of “Decentralized Meme” was to offer “memes”, those powerful images, internet and humor phenomena that make fun of situations that city dwellers face here in the countryside.
The need for a change of scenery
The meme is too much for the creators of Decentralized Memes, who therefore declared: “Like Johnny in 2017, it is time for us to pause our careers indefinitely.” The people behind this project reveal that they are social networks leave “without regret” and denounce “the shortcomings” of this environment: “It’s like Grandpa’s litter of kittens, it’s better to abandon them quickly at the barn door,” he concludes the account.
To know the exact reasons for this departure, we have to look at the replies under the Instagram post: “It’s an unstable and precarious situation to manage a meme account, plus we’ve only been the two of us for over five years, the burden becomes heavier and the desire diminishes over time.”
One of the co-creators explains that he now “often” sees the negative sides: “This is due to a personal situation, the desire for change, as well as the development of the Internet and formats (…) that we never had “Above all, we wanted to show our faces or become influencers.”
In response, many netizens expressed regret about this disappearance. The account had 433,000 subscribers on Instagram and 247,000 on X, formerly Twitter.
