Once again sad news from the cycling world. Because that’s how 66-year-old Jan Bogaert died on Tuesday. He had been battling a debilitating illness for some time and was unable to win a competition.
Bogaert is considered a cult hero at fair races, although he certainly didn’t just make a name for himself there. But the fact that he won so much around the steeple earned him the nickname “King of Beautiful Races.”
However, as already mentioned, it also had value on a professional level. In 1990 he even became the international winner with 17 victories (like Philipsen this year, editor’s note). Bogaert won a total of 247 games throughout his career.
This figure included the fairground races, but also big classics such as the E3 Prize – where he even beat Roger De Vlaeminck (pictures below) – the Scheldeprijs and Nokere Koerse. In 1982 Bogaert also came fifth in the Tour of Flanders and a year later second in the Amstel Gold Race.
