Cipulis started together with pushers Dāvi Spriņgi, Lauri Kaufman and Krista Lindenblatt, while Kalenda – with Edgar Ungur, Dāvi Kaufman and Edgar Nemmi.
The victory was celebrated by the quartet of German pilot Francesco Friedrich, who achieved the fastest times in both races and broke both the start and the course record. Friedrichs beat the runner-up – his compatriot and closest competitor Johannes Lohner – by 0.22 seconds, while Briton Brad Hall lost by 0.65 seconds.
Cipulis lost 0.85 seconds to the winner and shared fifth place with the Swiss Michael Vogt and the Italian Patrick Baumgartner. The first three were two tenths of a second apart.
In the first race, Cipulis’ crew had the fifth best start and fourth place at the finish, 0.36 and 0.26 seconds behind Friedrich and Lohner, and six hundredths of a second behind Hall. Three other teams were three, five and six hundredths of a second behind the Latvian
Kalenda and his partners had the seventh fastest start and finished ninth, losing 0.68 seconds to Friedrich. Two other foursomes were a hundredth of a second slower.
Cipulis had the sixth fastest start in the second race, the speed on the track was good enough, but after the 11th turn the first Latvian team made several mistakes, which left the Latvians nine hundredths of a second behind the Swiss Zimon Fridli. Cipulis scored the ninth result of the trip.
Kalend, who made the seventh-best start with his partners, had an unfortunate trip, but finished 13th and lost two positions as a result.
19 teams of four took part in the competition.
In the overall World Cup standings, Lohner is at the top with 1,305 points, Friedrichs is second with 1,295 points and Cipulis is third with 1,152 points. Kalenda is in 11th place with 832 points.
In the first week of February, the World Cup stage will take place in Sigulda, where the fight for the title of European champion in skeleton, two-man bobsleigh and monobob will take place at the same time. The European champions in the bobsleigh foursome were determined on the Eagles track in mid-December: Cipulis’ team won bronze medals and Kalenda’s foursome took tenth place.
In mid-February, the athletes compete on the German race track in Altenberg, the World Championships take place at the German race track in Winterberg in late February and early March, and the World Cup season ends in March with a stage on the US race track in Lake Placid.
