An outstanding cast
The Black Barons has clearly become the best Czech comedy that constantly entertains the Czech audience. The comedy, which presents the so-called Pétepaks or members of the technical support battalion, was created in 1992. This battalion formed a special part of our people’s army. Their commanders were uneducated and politically active officers. The mutual arguments between the two groups created absurd situations that parodied the conditions and relationships at the time.
The film Black Barons is remembered by many people, as well as its outstanding cast. For example, among the highly acclaimed actors who appeared in this most popular military comedy were Pavel Landovský, Bronislav Poloczek, Alois Švehlík, Miroslav Donutil and Rudolf Hrušínský Jr. These are just a few of the most famous actors who excelled in the film’s main roles. However, working with some of them was very demanding and complicated for the others involved in filming various acting scenes. And the most problematic was the aforementioned Pavel Landovský, who boycotted everything he could.
He drank alcohol, even while filming
One could say that the main character of this film was the actor Pavel Landovský, who was nicknamed Landŏák by his colleagues. In the film, however, he was given the nickname Major Terazky, which was the reason for his great success after several years of emigration in nearby Austria. However, the fact that he returned in front of the home film cameras was not at all appreciated by his colleagues. Everyone suspected that it wouldn’t be easy to film with him. Pavel Landovský was very moody and if he didn’t like something, he could tell everyone about it. The actor also liked to do whatever he wanted. For example, there were days when he completely ignored the prescribed script and decided to play his role in his own way. As a result, his colleagues often had to react quickly, and sometimes it wasn’t that easy.
Another time, however, he was so funny that individual scenes had to be re-shot several times because everyone on set laughed at his jokes and interesting stories. But filming with this actor was strenuous and incredibly demanding for the crew. However, a major problem arose when he began to fortify himself with alcohol between scenes. In addition, it was strictly forbidden at that time, but Pavel Landovský completely ignored the bans. Everyone present tried not to satisfy his craving for alcohol, and so there was not one of the actors among them who told him that it bothered him. Unfortunately, everyone got annoyed with his insane behavior when he drank more. than he could bear. He then became very aggressive and filming had to be stopped completely. However, his matter-of-fact demeanor paid off, as his portrayal of Major Terazky would never become as legendary as it is today. No other actor could have played this role so perfectly. And do you know what legendary phrase is associated with this actor? “What’s done is done, I’m a major now.”
A film that grossed millions
Another interesting aspect of this film is that it is also a huge success. The filmmakers earned an incredible amount of money from this work, which subsequently affected the actors’ salaries. Although the cinemas gradually closed from the beginning of the 1990s and Czech films were unable to establish themselves abroad, the “Black Barons” were extremely successful from the start. Almost one and a half million enthusiastic viewers came to see this film in Czech cinemas and managed to earn several million crowns.
The auditions and selection for the main roles were also strange. The famous roles of the members of the Technical Relief Battalion were played by actors who had long since completed their military service and were between the ages of 30 and 41 and already had families and children. The reason why no younger actors were cast may surprise you, but not a single young and experienced actor was available at that time. That’s why the makers resorted to tried and tested actors, even if they weren’t exactly the youngest.
